Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, October 2 8 ,1 9 9 8 - S E V E N Anne Cook Lowe to celebrate 100th On Oct. 31, 1898, an English baby was bom to Thomas and Jenny Lowe and given the name Annie Cook Lowe. This baby turns 100 years old this Halloween and is still doing fine. She was bom in a time of no automobiles, airplanes or the festive day of Halloween. Computers, cellular telephones and fax machines were unimaginable. Through the years, she has seen World War I and II, the Roaring 20's and the Depression of the 30's, the Baby boom of the 50's and witnessed the first man on the moon. The totals add up, one century, 10 decades and 18 U.S. presidents. Annie Cook Lowe was bom in Durham, England Oct. 31, 1898, Her family migrated to the United States when she was 16. Her family had tickets to travel aboard the "unsinkable" Titanic, but did not because her mother would not take a maiden voyage ship. She did later travel on the White Star Ship Line. Annie's family traveled across southern Canada and the United States and eventually ended up in Cecil, Oregon. While today, trees, houses and fences adorn Cecil, these features were not present 85 years ago. Annie's family ran the Cecil Store and Post Office and Annie can still remember the last of those who crossed the Oregon Trail as late as 1920, Annie met her future husband in 1917, a young draftee on his way to war. "Wait for me babe," he had said as he boarded the train at Cecil, and she did. She married Henry W. Krebs on September 11, 1925, in the dance hall above the Cecil Store. Henry and Annie had two children, Carleen Krebs West and Henry Robert Krebs. Annie has six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Longevity must run in the Lowe family with two of Annie's siblings into their nineties today. Sheep played an active part in Annie and Henry’s life together. Each spnng for nearly 50 years, they would travel with the sheep to summer range in East Glacier Park, Montana. Even after they moved to Arlington in 1952, Henry continued to travel to the ranch at Cecil, until his death in 1973. At the age of 79, Annie was honored as a life-time member of the Oregon Sheep Growers Association. Annie can trace her sheep heritage back to her grandfather who owned a woolen mill in England. Annie a long-time resident of Arlington, moved to Hermiston about two years ago. She was always known for her "famous" chocolate roll and brownies at the Arlington Methodist Church bazaar. adopted weed control policy. Joe and Donna Rietmann, JDR Farms, will be honored as the district's 1998 Cooperator of the Year and Dick and Virginia Wilkinson will be awarded the John Day-Umatilla Basin 1998 Cooperator of the Year award presented by the Oregon Association of Conservation Districts.
