Heppner Gazette-Tim es, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, O ctober 28, 1998 - FOURTEEN Colts win championship, finish season 8 and 0 . % BG CKN O M ’S TAVERN CArußDAY, òcroe>£(2- 3 i 5 r M tm ** iW By Rick Paullus The Heppner Colts capped an undefeated season by defeating Les Schwab, 8-7, in the Hermiston Grid Kids championship game on Saturday, Oct. 24. The Colts advanced to the championship game by beating Stanfield, 8 to 6, in the semi finals on Wednesday, Oct. 21, in Heppner. Neither team was able to score in the first quarter as both teams defenses' dominated play. In the second quarter the Colts' David Flynn broke through the middle to block a Stanfield punt and give the Colts good field position. The Colts were unable, to score, however, but the defense held Stanfield and forced another punt. J.C. Shemtt took the punt on the run and returned it 40 yards to the 18 yard line of Stanfield. Tyler Boyer then took a pitch around right end and raced to the end zone for the touchdown. Flynn kicked the extra point to give the Colts an 8-0 halftime lead. Stanfield cut the lead to 8-6 in the third period when their quarterback broke through a couple of qrm tackles for a long touchdown run. The extra point kick was no good. That turned out to be the difference in the game as the Colts' defense played a lot better in the fourth quarter to preserve the win. In the championship game in Hermiston, the Les Schwab team completely dominated the first quarter as the Colts had only one play which was a fumbled hand-off recovered by Les Schwab. Les Schwab drove down the field and scored a touchdown on a seven-yard run early in the second quarter. The conversion run gave them a 7-0 lead. The Colts came back fired up, getting good runs uom Jode Coil and J.C. Shemtt to give them a first down at the 37 of Les Schwab. Coil then hit Kory Paullus for a 32-yara pass play down to the five. Coil took it in from there for the touchdown. David Flynn kicked the extra point to give the Colts the lead at 8-7. Les Schwab drove down to the 25 of the Colts but ran out of time as the first half ended. The Colts returned the favor of ball control in the third quarter by keeping it almost the entire quarter. The Colts were forced to punt, but Les Schwab fumbled to give the ball right back. The Colts, however, fumbled a lateral pass to give the ball back to Les Schwab. On the last play of the third quarter, a Les Schwab runner broke free around end for a 30-yard gain down to the 29 of the Colts. The Colts defense stiffened and took over on downs at their own 22 yard line. Behind the running of Coil, Sherritt, Flynn and Tyler Boyer, the Colts picked up three consecutive first downs and ran out the clock to preserve the win.
