FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, September 2,1998 Heppner Booster Club meeting planned A meeting of the Heppner High School Booster Club will be held Wednesday, Sept. 9. at 7 p m. at the high school. Room 14. The agenda includes election of officers. "Anyone interested in holding an office is urged to attend," said club President Sonja McCabe. "Booster Club's success is contingent upon membership participation," said McCabe. "We need you help and support by attending meetings. There is a need for more volunteers to become involved in the organizational process of our club. Please feel free to attend any of our meetings." The Booster Club meets the second Wednesday of the month at the high school. The club usually puts on three to four fund raisers a year. Their first activity is a tailgate party at a home football game, followed by their annual steak feed and auction held the opening weekend of bird season and then a chili feed dunng basketball season. Last year they also hosted the annual MorTow County Basketball Tournament. All proceeds made by the club are used for the benefit of students grades seven through 12. The Booster Club awards four $300 scholarships each year and supports other school programs and activities. Get involved in Adopt-a-Highway picking up litter as it accumulates along the roadsides leading into town. The Oregon Department of Transportation (OIX)T) has an Adopt-a-Highway program which can be a way to maintain the good appearance of our community entries. Details of the Adopt-a- Highway program may be obtained from our local ODOT maintenance foreman, Jim King, 676-5545, or from the District 12 coordinator for the program. George Ruby, 276-2141. I encourage community organizations or businesses to consider becoming involved in the Adopt-a-Highway program and help Heppner realize the full benefit of the many improvements we have accomplished. (s) John.Edmundson Heppner To the Editor: The Heppner community has accomplished a lot in the last few years in regard to improvements for our town. We can point with pride to the Mam Street modernization, the new aquatic center, the rebuilt rodeo grounds, the Heppner Flood Memorial mini-park, the new ball fields and playgrounds, new school facilities and many other projects that make Heppner a great place to live. Another important part of the liveability/quality of life package is doing a good job with keeping up the appearance of what we have worked so hard to accomplish. We all need to take a serious look at the entries to town and ask ourselves if we are doing as much as we can and should with regard to control of littering and Bank of Eastern O regon secures grant for local assisted living facility The Home Loan Bank of Seattle awarded a $ 10,000 grant to the Bank of Eastern Oregon to help fund predevelopment costs for a proposed new assisted living facility for the elderly in the Willow Creek Valley, announced James R. Faulstich, president and chief executive officer of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle. The Federal Home Bank of Seattle's Challenge Fund provides grants to financial institutions for the predevelopment expenses of affordable housing, such as feasibility studies, architectural and engineering fees or grant- writing expenses. Grants are made to the lender and passed on the housing developer. If the housing is developed, grants are repaid; grants are forgiven if the proposal does not prove feasible. Bank of Eastern Oregon will provide the grant funds to the Willow Creek Valley Assisted Living Corporation (WCVALC) which plans to build an assisted living facility to meet the needs of the elderly in the Willow Creek Valley, the Heppner, lone and Lexington areas. Approximately 10 of the 20 residents will earn less than 50 percent of the Morrow County median income ($13,500 per year for an individual). The Challenge Fund grant will be used to pay for a feasibility study to assess the number of apartments needed to meet the demand. It will also be used to hire a consultant to complete funding applications and an architect to provide site plans and drawings required by the funding sources. Challenge Fund grants are combined with financial or in- kind contributions from the lender. If the project is financially feasible, the Bank of Eastern Oregon will provide construction and permanent financing with reduced loan fees valued at $5,000 and will donate accounting services to WCVALC. The clinic will be staffed by Dr. Clyde Burnham, a board certified family care practitioner, who speaks fluent Spanish. A physician's assistant is being sought and will be joining the staff at the Boardman Medical Clinic in the near future to add additional coverage. “We anticipate the Boardman Medical Clinic to be open 40 hours per week,” says Scot Jacobson, human resources director for the Morrow County Health District. “We are currently recruiting a medical assistant to work perma nently at the Boardman Medical Clinic.” MCHD has been recruiting for the clinic for several months, said Jacobson. “I’m confident that we will be able to find a practitioner and meet the needs o f the Boardman community,” said Su san Brock, MCHD administrator. “We contacted several potential candidates, both local and out of the area. Nothing has been set in stone and we will continue to seek the right match for the commu nity. Firm selected for operations expansion Knerr Construction Irtc. has been selected for the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) expan sion project in Heppner. The EOC Phase II construction involves in creasing existing work space. Knerr plans to start the project by mid-September. The project will include construction of an emergency operations room and will provide more storage room for emergency supplies and equip ment. “The expanded work space will allow Morrow County Emer gency Management to deploy re- cently purchased autom ation equipment and electronically dis play critical emergency informa tion,” said a Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Pro gram (CSEPP) news release. “The advantage o f an ex panded EOC will be that when individuals report for an exercise or real emergency, they will be working together in the same room,” said Dan Knoll, Morrow County public information officer. “This will increase the flow and accuracy of information from one workstation to another and elimi nate setup time during the critical initial minutes of an emergency. The cost of the project is ap proximately $250.000. Funding for the project was provided through CSEPP, funded by U.S. Army and adm inistered by the Federal Em ergency M anagem ent Agency. H eppner class of 1978 holds reunion The 20-year reunion of the Heppner High School Class ol 1978 was held the weekend of the Morrow County Fair. A potluck barbecue on the courthouse lawn was attended by 24 classmates and their families. An anonymous source reportedly witnessed Dee Hedman Miller. Lynn Gochnauer Gulke, Sally Sumner Runnion and Shelley Thompson Connelly climbing the hill in back of the rodeo arena about midnight and rearranging the rocks to read "78".
