ter curfew in Heppner. The com­
plainant was advised that the sub­
ject was not a juvenile.

for an ambulance for a man who
had been drinking. It ended up
being a police action.

assistance from a deputy while on
a stop with an armed career crimi­
nal.
MCSO received a report o f a
man threatened by another man
who is allegedly a m em ber o f the
Mexican Mafia and carries an Uzi
with him.

mail opened and thrown along a
road.
MCSO received a report o f a
suspicious vehicle in Irrigon.
MCSO dispatched to the Hepp­
ner Police Dept, a report o f sev­
eral juveniles vandalizing the pop
machine at H eppner'Elem entary
School.
MCSO received a request for
an ambulance for a man with a
cut foot.
MCSO dispatched to the Or­
egon State Police a report o f a
coyote hit and appearing paralyzed
and needing to be put down.
July 14: MCSO received a re­
port o f possible cruelty to animals
in Boardman.
M CSO received a report o f
possible m ail fraud. A Florida
woman had ordered Beanie Ba­
bies at an Irrigon address and sent
a check for $150 and didn’t re­
ceived them. The other woman
allegedly has several mail drops
where money can be sent and then
does not provide the merchandise.
Oregon State Police arrested
Rodney Bryce Virgil, 37, for the
M anufacture/Delivery o f a Con­
trolled Substance. V irgil was
lodged at the Um atilla County
S h eriff s office jail.
MCSO received a report of a
white van passing a vehicle in the
no-passing zone and almost run­
ning them o ff the road.

Boardman ambulance a report o f
a 10 year old girl who attempted
to jum p a bike ramp on her bike,
didn’t make it, and landed on her
head. She was wearing a helmet
but she couldn’t move her arms
and legs. The patient was trans­
ported to Good Shepherd Commu­
nity Hospital in Hermiston.

male in a white van pulling a gun
on another man.
MCSO dispatched to the Hepp­
ner ambulance a report o f an ill
wom an requesting to be trans­
ported to Pioneer Memorial Hos­
pital in Heppner.

yelling near a residence in Hepp­
ner.
M CSO received a report o f
kids at the city park and one o f
the kids jumped in front of a pickup
and yelled as the pickup went by.
MCSO deputy arrested Vem
Folly, 19, for Driving Under the
Influence o f Intoxicants, Reckless
Driving, Driving While License
Suspended misdemeanor. Folly
drove the wrong way (westbound
in the eastbound lane) on I-G4.
July 15: MCSO received a re­
port o f a man followed around
town then out to the dam tailgated
all the way by a person in a light
blue Ford pickup.

Burt, 19, was arrested for Parole
Violation/Unauthonzed Use o f a
M otor Vehicle and local charges
o f R esisting A rrest. Burt was
lodged at the Um atilla County
S heriff s office jail.

reported to be out o f vehicle stag­
gering with unknown injuries.
July 20: MCSO received a re­
port o f g raffiti on a fence in
Imgon. An officer was requested.
MCSO received a report o f a
fire at the Heppner Post Office.
The fire was out, but the post of­
fice requested it checked out.
MCSO dispatched to the Hepp­
ner Police Dept, a report o f a child
custody problem.
MCSO dispatched to the Hepp­

hicle keyed while parked near an
apartment.
MCSO received a report o f a
blue and silver Bronco that ran in

July 21: MCSO received a com­
plaint concerning problem with a
person supposedly selling Beanie
Babies.
Sherman County ambulance,
Rescue 1 and Rufus EM Ts re­
sponded to a report o f a boy with
his arm trapped at the grain el­
evators. The patient was trans­
ported.
MCSO received a report from
a woman in Im gon that her son
kicked in the door at her residence.
He didn’t have a weapon nor al­
cohol or drugs, he was just mad.
MCSO received a report o f a
12 month old baby not breathing.
The baby was taken on foot to

Coalition promotes breastfeeding
August 1-7 is "World
Breastfeeding Week" and the

encourages mothers to breastfeed
their infants.
Breastfeeding is not only
beneficial to the infant, but also
to the mother, the community
and the environment, says
Sherree Smith, local contact.
According to a coaltion news
release:
-Breastfeeding gives infants the
most complete nutrition possible,
with nutrients and antibodies
necessary for babies to thrive.
Studies
have
shown
that
breastfed children have fewer
and less serious illnesses,
including reduced risk o f Sudden
Infant Death Syndrome and
fewer incidents o f childhood
cancer and diabetes
-Mothers who breastfeed are
healthier, enjoying decreased
risks o f breast and ovarian
cancer, anemia and osteoporosis,
and develop a close relationship
with their baby formed through
breastfeeding.
-Families who breastfeed save
money because they don’t have to
buy formula and the health
benefits o f breastfeeding provide
savings on health care costs and
related time lost to care for sick
children.
-Communities benefit from
breastfed babies, because less tax
money is required to provide

Families
who
breastfeed have more money
available to purchase goods and
services. Research also shows
that breastfeed babies have
higher IQs as well as better brain
and
n erv o u s
sy stem
development.
-Breastfeeding does not use the
tin, paper, plastic or energy
necessary
for
preparing,
packaging
and
transporting
artificial
baby
m ilks.
Breastfeeding cuts down on
pollution and garbage disposal
problems. In addition, according
to the coalition, research shows
that exclusive breastfeeding
naturally spaces pregnancies.
The coalition provides some
simple things to do to promote
breastfeeding in the community,
such as reacting positively and
encouraging
breastfeeding
mothers,
thanking
the
management o f restaurants,
stores and public facilities which
treat breastfeeding m others and
babies
with
respect;
and
checking to see if the place o f
worship, club, gym, library or
other facility is supportive o f
women who breastfeed and
provides a place for m others to
breastfeed their babies, among
other things.
