. ■ ■ » John Day U nit closed fire season Closed fire season will be declared on the John Day Unit within the Central Oregon District of the Oregon Department of Forestry at 12:01 a m., Friday, July 10. During the closed fire season, open burning is restricted except by permit. The following requirements for forest operations will be in effect: equipment must be equipped with spark arresters and fire extinguishers; fire tools must be carried; watchman service is required; and smoking is prohibited within an operation area. These restrictions and requirements apply to lands Grant writing workshop scheduled A regional grant writing work shop for the six counties of north central Oregon is set for Tuesday, July 14 at Fossil, from 9 a m.-3 p.m. at Isobel Edwards Hall at the Wheeler County Fairgrounds. Sue Brewer, Integrated Fam ily Services director of the Mid- Columbia Council of Governments and grant writer, will conduct the workshop. Topics will include latest grant trends, writing winning proposals in a highly competitive market, building on successes and lever aging funds. Information will be presented on a range of potential funding sources including founda tions and federal and state agen cies. Individual projects will also be addressed. The workshop will be geared toward intermediate and advanced grant writing techniques, although first-time grant writers, as well as experienced, are invited to attend. There will be a no-host one hour lunch break. The workshop is sponsored by Wheeler County and costs $35 per person, which includes all materi als. Registration is at the door or in advance through Wheeler Co. Economic Development, P.O. Box 427, Fossil, OR 97830. Checks may be made payable to Wheeler County. Colleges announce spring honor roll Eastern Oregon University Eastern Oregon University has announced its 1998 spring quar ter dean’s list. To qualify for the dean's list, students must have a 3.5 grade point average or better and a minimum of 12 graded hours. Luke Swanson of lone and Ryan Munkers of Lexington qualified for the list. Central Oregon Community College Central Oregon Community College has announced its 1998 spring term honor roll. Ben Ewing of Heppner received high honors, a 3.75-3.89 grade point average and Rachel Gremnger of Spray received honors (3.6-3.74 grade point average). Engagement Tallman - McConnell Robert McConnell and Cynthia Tallman Cynthia Tallman and Robert McConnell have announced their engagement to be married on July 11, 1998, at Cutsforth Park. The bride-to-be is a Heppner Elementary educational assistant. The bridegroom is employed at the Pioneer Memorial Hospital as a certified nurse's aide. Parents are Howard and Donna Honeycutt of Kennewick, WA.. and Charles McConnell of Heppner. The officiating pastor will be Duane Jones. St. Patrick's Senior Center Bulletin Board There were 79 present for the senior dinner July 1 and 16 meals were home delivered. Paul Breeding and Tom Sly did a great job barbecuing the hamburgers. Linda Crane of the Christian Missionary Fellowship helped in the kitchen, serving and cleaning up. A Nutrition Site Meeting with only three members present was held after the meal. Bingo was played at 1 p.m.. Hearing aid assistance was given and blood pressures taken before the meal. The menu for July 15 will be chicken enchiladas, green salad, Jello with carrots and pineapple and cookies. Members of the Episcopal Church will serve. Blood pressures will be taken before the meal There was no breakfast Friday. The menu for July 10 will be potato and egg casserole, muffin, cereal, fruit, orange juice, milk and coffee. The July 17 menu will be waffles, bacon, hot or cold cereal, fruit, orange juice, milk and coffee. Pinochle was played both Tuesday and Friday afternoons. The office was not open Friday since the staff took a Fourth of July holiday. The bus is scheduled to go Condon Thursday, July 23. Sign up on the sign-up sheet in the senior office or call 676-9030. Remember exercise class Tuesday and Thursday 10 a.m. Cards will be Tuesday and Friday afternoons. The Dollaride car is available to take seniors and the disabled to appointments. Call the Senior Center office to schedule. There are great drivers for each week day, 8 a m. to 5 p.m. Call the day before your appointment if possible. Call at least two or three days ahead for out of town appointments. The 86-page publication covers most topics a producer must consider before starting a recreation component on a farm or ranch, including property m a n a g e m e n t, z o n in g considerations, employing other people, building codes, special permits for public land use, landowner liability and nsk management, creation of a business plan, financing and marketing. Osmin, Hague wood to attend space course C ara Osmin and Mary Haguewood, both teachers at Heppner Elementary School, have received a tuition fellowship to attend the United States Space Foundation’s Space Discovery graduate course this summer in Colorado Springs, CO. The fel lowship is funded by the founda tion and a NASA grant. Space Discovery prepares K- 12 educators to use space science and technology in the classroom to enhance students’ learning and achievement. The five-day course teaches educators how to inte grate space-related concepts across the curriculum. Hands-on, experience-based instruction in cludes subjects such as the his tory of space, theory of orbits and rocketry, space effects on the hu man body and the space shuttle, said a foundation news release. Courses are conducted at the United States Air Force Academy, United States Air Force Space Command and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. In structors for Space Discovery in clude foundation education staff, members of the Air Force Acad emy astronautics dept, and offi cials at the Air Force Space Com mand. The foundation is a non-profit educational organization. Open ings in Space Discovery courses for this summer and tuition fellow ship opportunities are still avail able. Baker, son of Robin and Robert Baker of lone, recently departed on a six-month deployment to the western Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean and Arabian Gulf aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. Baker is one of more than 5,000 sailors and marines aboard the ship, which departed its home port of Everett, WA., to lead the USS Abraham Lincoln Battle Group. The group is comprised of 10 tac tical air squadrons, five surface combatants and two submarines. The 1996 graduate of lone High School joined the Navy in June 1996. Teruo “Terry” Chinen was commissioned as a Second Lieu tenant on June 13 in the Oregon Army National Guard. He will spend the winter at Fort Knox, Kentucky, at officer basic courses camp.
