Editor Obituaries Hazel Weeks H azel W eeks, 79, o f Boardman, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at Good Shepherd Commu nity Hospital in Hermiston. A memorial gathenng for the family and friends of Mrs. Weeks will be held on Friday, July 3,1998. She was bom September 15, 1918, at Augusta, Kansas, to Jam es and M onta Howard Hammond. The family moved to Colorado while she was still a baby and litter moved to California, where she grew up. She married Glenn Robert Th ompson and in 1945 they moved to Ely, Nevada. Mr. Thompson died and she later married James Tippett. They lived in Utah and California until his death. She then m arried Vernon Weeks. They lived at Arlington from 1970-75, when they moved to Boardman. Mr. Weeks preceded her in death. Mrs. Weeks was a member of the Boardman Eagles Auxiliary 3714. She enjoyed fishing, her grand children and great-grandchildren, bingo, the outdoors and her friends. Survivors include sons, Bill Th ompson in Kansas, and Butch Tippett of Oak Harbor, Washing ton; daughters, Bobbi Jean Peck of Boardman, Bonnie Perkins of Enterprise, Connie Rodriguez of Boardman and Debbie Murphy of Monument; 20 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and five great- great-grandchildren. She was pre ceded in death by three husbands, a brother, Coral Hammond, and sisters, Bemiece Myovich and Hilda Hammond. Bums Mortuary of Hermiston is in charge of arrangements. Duck Lusher, Jr. DeRoyce D. “Duck” Lusher, Jr., 61, o f Lex ington, died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at his home. A memorial " service was m *• held Friday, # I * • June 12,1998 at Duck Lusher, Jr. the H eppner Elks Lodge. Graveside service was held Saturday, June 13,1998, at the Napa vine, Washington cem etery. Mr. Lusher was bom April 13, 1937, at Bee, Nebraska, to De Royce and Lorene Frahm Lusher. He graduated from M ankato High School at Mankato, Kansas. He served with the U.S. Air Force. Following his discharge, he moved to Centralia, Washington and attended Centralia College. He went to work for the Wash ington Dept, o f Highways in Olympia, Washington and later tran sferred to Yakim a and Kennewick, Washington before his retirement after 24 years. In May 1989, he moved to Lex ington where he was assistant di rector of public works until retir ing in April 1997. Following his retirement, he traveled extensively throughout the continental United States and Maui, Hawaii. He en joyed fishing, golfing, gardening and working in his yard. He was a member of Heppner Elks Lodge 358. Survivors include his wife, Cecilia “Annie” Lusher, of Lex ington; sons, DeRoyce "B o” Lusher o f Maui, Hawaii, Richard Rives, serving with the U.S. Army, and Daniel Lusher o f Lacey, Washington; daughters, Dawn Lusher o f Yakima, Teresa Bill of Pasco, W ashington, Laurie Panagio of Westminster, Califor nia, Denell O ’Neil of Maui, Ha waii, Deborah Rives o f West minster, California and Tamara Larson o f Port Orchard, Wash- rngton; his mother, Lorene Murphy of Chehalis, Washington; step mother, Marge Lusher of Citrus Heights, California; brother, Dana Murphy o f Centralia; sisters, Deborah Date o f C hehalis, Deanna Spooner of San Diego, California and Denise Murphy of McCleary, Washington; ex-wife and friend, Linda Lusher o f Yakima; 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Sticklin Funeral Chapel, Centralia, WA., was in charge of arrangements. Stanley M. Kemp Stanley M. Kemp, 71, of Lex ington, died Friday, June 12,1998, in a motor vehicle accident near Ellensburg, Washington. The funeral was held Wednes day, June 17,1998 at the Heppner Elks Lodge. Concluding service and burial followed at the Lexing ton Cemetery. Stanley Kemp was bom De cember 29, 1926, at Wiley City, Washington, to Elmer and Esther Pringle Kemp. He was raised at Wiley City and attended local schools, graduating from Hoover High School in 1944. Following graduation, he served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed on the Aleu tian Islands. After his military ser vice, he moved to Lexington, where he farmed for nearly 50 years, retiring in 1996. On June 4, 1998, he mamed Darlene Scroggins at Vancouver, Washington. Mr. Kemp was named 1995 Morrow County Conservation Farmer of the Year. He was a m em ber o f the Heppner Elks Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Willow Creek Country Club, Oregon Wheat League and former director of Morrow County Grain Growers, the Lexington School Council and the Morrow County Fair Board and was a member of the Lex ington City Council. Survivors include his wife, Darlene, of Lexington; sons, Gary of Lexington, and Steve of Pater son, Washington; daughter, Sheriy Kemp of Pendleton; two grand daughters, Tina and Tom Kemp of Lexington; stepsons, Jesse Scroggins of Parkdale, and Will Scroggins and Lloyd Scroggins, both of Portland; sister, Luella Kemp of Goldendale, Washington; brothers, Marv of Shelton, Wash ington, and Don of Goldendale; and two step-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his par ents and a brother, Junior. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heppner Elks 358 Foundation, P.O. Box 494, Heppner, OR 97836. Sweeney Mortuary, Heppner, is in charge of arrangements. A memorial graveside service for Lyle Kincaid will be held Sat urday, June 20 at 11 a.m. at High View Cemetery in lone. Mr. Kincaid, 59, formerly of Heppner and lone, died in Phoe nix, Arizona on May 22, 1998. Mr. Kincaid was bom to Harold and Ruby Padberg Kincaid, in Heppner on February 17, 1939. He attended schools in lone, Ord nance and the School for the Blind in Salem. He trained to become a masseur and moved to Phoenix. Because o f health problems he gave up his profession and went to work for the Industries of the Blind in Phoenix. He took an early retirement because of poor health. He had been a resident of Phoe nix since 1965. Mr. Kincaid was a member of BPOE #358 Heppner and an el der of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Phoenix. Survivors include his mother, Ruby Miller of The Dalles; broth ers, Ralph of Silverton, and Lind say of lone; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold; brother, Roger; stepfather, George Miller; and stepbrother, Paul Miller. Survivors include niece, Peggy Brittner of Heppner, and nephews, John Cason of Prinevill, and Steve Estberg of Boise, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Bryant and her brother, Jack Estberg. Sweeney Mortuary of Heppner is in charge of arrangements. Returning students, potential students who have recently placement tested and students transferring from another college may make their appointment over the phone by calling 278- 5930. Students who will be new to BMCC and who have never attended college will start the Hardman reunion cancelled this year III Twilight Crop Tour on June 24 Here is your chance to stump the experts and at the same time learn more about the Oregon State Variety Trials. On June 24 at 6 p.m., OSU Morrow County Extension Service will sponsor a tour of the variety trials. Karen Morrow, biological science research technician, and Don Wysocki, Extension soil scientist, will be on hand to answer questions about the trials, direct seeding, alternative cropping systems and soil fertility. To get to the tour location from Heppner take the Condon Highway (Hwy 206) to Dale Brown-Hardman Ridge Road, turn left. The plots are approximately one mile from the highway on the left. ,'ir ■/! U'iDS' If* l*">7 The Hardman reunion has been cancelled this year due to lack of interest. The annual Father's Day get-together has been held at the Hardman Community Center for a number of years. Jack and Jill tournament A Jack and Jill mini-tournament will be held at the Willow Creek Country Club, Friday, June 19 at 6 p.m. Couples will play nine holes with the format determined by the committee in charge. Prizes will be awarded for low scores and special events. The charge will be $3 per couple for members and $10 per couple for non-members. Light snacks will be provided by the committee in charge. Hosts are Rollie and Debbie Marshall with help from Ray and Norma French and Earl and Peggy Fishbum. Monica Swanson presented the logo for the t-shirts the club will sell for the Fourth of July. Club members voted to order 200 shirts in adult and children’s sizes and try to sell as many as possible at $15 each before the Fourth. The shirts should be available for sale at W heatland Insurance after Wednesday, July 1. The club voted to reimburse Dennis Stefani $150 for partici pation in the Hermiston boys’ bas ketball summer league. Dana Heideman was given $20 for fees to participate in the Boardman girls’ basketball summer league and $130 to cover expenses for the La Grande tournament. President Cindy Burright has purchased a picture of the 1997 girls’ championship track team. The picture will be used on a plaque honoring the champions. The club provided balloon bou quets for the state track and ten nis participants last month. The next meeting of the lone Booster Club will be Thursday, Sept. 10, at 8 p.m. A surprise retirement party for Dennis Toney will be held at the Umpqua Discovery Center, 409 Riverfront Way, Reedsport, on July 18 from 1-5 p.m. Toney taught photography and journalism at Heppner High School in the 1970s and speaks fondly of his time teaching in the Heppner community. "I know he would be delighted to see some faces from the past or hear from those of you who were dear to him," says Cynthia Toney.
