The ag. report was given by W ilm a M artin, w h o to ld the group that the price o f wheat is the lowest that it has been for years. The Wheat League recently sent a delegation to Washington D.C. to tell o f the fanner’ s d i lemma. There was also much dis cussion on the initiatives passed by the legislature. Citizens have no knowledge o f them until they become a law, and need more in formation about the things that go on at the legislature that need to be discussed by the voters before passed. The right o f prayer for ill chil dren was discussed concerning the fact that there are many par ents that do not take their children to a physician and the children so m etim es d ie because they weren’ t taken to a hospital or phy sician. There was much discussion on the need for young farmers to keep abreast o f farming problems and one w ay is to attend the Grange, which is a legislative body. Grange also has a man at the sessions in Salem to keep abreast o f matters. There was some discussion brought about the degree work o f the order. The people who join and are obligated are given one year to take the four degrees, fo l lo w in g this not taken can be dropped by the subordinates. The cakewalk was enjoyed af ter which the program was given, which was a report on the newly organized fire district fo r the Spray area. There are training ses lone girls tennis team earns honors sions each week for the fighters and the maintenance o f the equip ment. The fire district has been recognized by the state o f Oregon. It is financed by money makers and grants. One o f the m oney makers w ill be a ducky derby to be held July 11 at 11 p.m. Cost is $5 per duck. T h e W heatland Pomona purchased a duck to en ter. Resolutions included a thank you for Spray for the dinner and hospitality and concerning the drawdown o f the Snake and C o lumbia rivers and how it w ill af fect the farming industry. Both were approved by the order. A date for the yearly G W A conference was suggested the week o f June 7-13. Subordinates w ill be notified by the Pomona secretary. The chair o f chaplain was de cla red vacan t and Z e lm a McDaniel was elected to fill the office. The delivery o f the sheaf o f grain from Umatilla County was discussed. It w ill be brought to Lexington Grange Master and Pomona secretary on June 11 and w ill be taken onto Wasco County on June 13 by Aloha Medlock. This is to be canned food week and non-perishable food w ill be collected to be taken to the state session. The Grange has adopted the “ Make a Wish Foundation” and abused children projects, which they are helping finance by sav ing pull tabs from cans. The next Pomona meeting w ill be in July at Greenfield Grange. The Pomona secretary w ill notify the subordinates o f the plans later in the year. Bristow elected BEO chairman The Oregon School Activities Association, along with the Dairy Farmers of Oregon, has announced that the lone High School girls' tennis team has been included in the spring 1998 academic all-state award winners. The lone girls' team was first academically in all 3A, 2 A and 1A school tennis teams in the state. The team has a grade-point average o f 3.77. Other winners include the Ontario High School orchestra, with a 3.67 grade point average; Crook County High School boys' g o lf team, 3.68 gpa; Lakendge High School boys’ tennis team, 3.76; Lakeridge High School girls' g o lf team, 3.81; Santiam Christian High School track and field team, 3.58; Crook County High School baseball team, 3.65; and Damascus Christian High School softball team, 3.87. The lone girls' tennis team w ill be presented an award on M ay 23 at the state champion ship. Schools submitted their team rosters to the O S A A , with each student's grade level and previous semester grades. The grades used to determine athletic eligibility for all high school student athletes are the same grades used t conclude the academic all-state award winners. The academic all-state award is designed to recognize the top boys' and girls' team in each o f the O SA A's sanctioned activities based upon that team's total grade-point average. The top team in each sport or activity will receive a certificate for their achievement and their school w ill receive a plaque for display. for J U S T IC E O F T H E P E A C E ■ • • - - BMCC offers placement test sessions T o better serve potential students who work during the day or who are attending high school, Blue Mountain Community C ollege Admissions and Advising staff are offering two evening placement test sessions. The first session w ill be held in Pendleton Tuesday, M ay 19, at 6 p.m. in the Pioneer Hall Counseling Center. The second session w ill be Thursday, May 21, at 6 p.m. at BM CC's West Campus in Hermiston. Reservations are required for testers. T o make an appointment for the Pendleton session call 541/278-5929 or 278-5930. T o make an appointment for the Hermiston session call 541/567- 1800. There is a $10 testing fee. The A S S E T placement test is given to help counselor's and advisors assess student ability in reading, writing and math, ensuring that students take the appropriate classes for their skill level. The test is required before students may make a registration appointment. The placement test is offered on a regular basis each Monday and Thursday at 9 a.m., throughout the year except for major holidays. The test is offered in the Counseling Center in Pioneer Hall. Don Bristow, a retired grocer from lone, w ill serve as chairman o f the board. Bristow was elected to the board o f directors in September o f 1987 and has served as the board vice W eb P ages H eppner G azette 676-9228 chairman for the past two years. He is active in the lone Church o f Christ in a variety o f capacities. Bristow is a member o f the lone Lions Club, Heppner Elks and IC AB O . He also volunteers on a daily basis in the lone Elementary School reading program. Bob Kahl, co owner o f Van Marter and Kahl Insurance Inc., a property and casualty general lines agency located in Heppner has been elected vice chairman for 1998-99. Kahl has served on the board since July o f 1995. He is active in the Heppner United Methodist Church and Heppner Chamber o f Commerce.
