In support of Perry Atkinson To the Editor: We have the opportunity to elect a man whose purpose is not professional politics. We have so many who lack the courage to stand on principle, who daily check the opinion polls before deciding where to stand. Perry Atkinson, Republican candidate for the U.S. Congress for the Second District is a man of high principles whose aim in running for office is to protect the people of Oregon from further erosion of our basic standards by the professional politicians. Perry Atkinson says, let’s "overhaul the IRS now. Taxes should be simpler and lower. Let us not begin with what America needs to spend, but what Americans deserve to keep. " Get federal bureaucracy out of our schools. Parents, not bureaucrats, should be in charge of local education. "Get federal bureaucrats off our backs, out of our pockets, off our land, and out of our water. "Rampant federal regulations strangle our farming and timber industries and erode our water and property rights. Oregonians are the best stewards of our land. "Small business and farmers need to be free to compete with one another, not the mountains of regulations thrown at them by the federal government. Perry’s chief rival is Greg Walden who has garnered the support o f some good people. So just a quick review might cause us to go along with the crowd. Walden has aligned himself with legislators from the Portland area. They pursue the spending of tax dollars in ways that do not benefit the taxpayers of our 2nd District. Oregon Right-to-Life has endorsed Perry Atkinson because Greg Walden supports pro- choice. He even voted against parental notification. His rather lame excuse for that critical vote was fear of liability, but it doesn't hold water because 25 other states have passed the law giving parents the right to be notified regarding a minor's abortion. The people of the state of Oregon are denied parental rights because of Greg Walden and his cohorts. It is time to elect a man who does not have the political ties that bring about our undoing. Let's vote for Perry Atkinson. (s) Roy Comne Pendleton Retain Lundquist To the Editor: I take this opportunity to commend the voters of the state of Oregon Representative District 59 for electing and retaining Lynn Lundquist for fair and honest representation since the 1994 election. His strength, determination and fairness has brought exceptional honor and respect to the position, illustrated by the fact he was elected speaker of the house in his second term by his own peers. I have known Lynn Lundquist, his wife, Barb, and family for a number of years and I watched with hope, interest and concern when he first ran for state Representative. With hope and interest because I know Lynn to be a caring but fair man. I was sure he would do his level best to represent us well, with a desire to see that eastern and central Oregon got on the porch of the "big dogs" from the metropolitan areas where we seldom receive equal representation. I watched with concern because I knew it would take an inordinate amount of determination, strength and courage to turn things around. Lynn does have all of these qualities but pressure over time can wear down a rock of the fin- nest composition. I am pleased to note that Representative Lundquist has not wavered under pressure few of us can comprehend. Even the pressure and adversities of this election find him strong and resolute in his commitments to his constituents and his desire to represent us. I urge you not to let the "big dogs"drive us back under the porch. Remain clear-headed and think for yourselves. Go directly to your state representative for the answers to your questions. Keep us up on top in the 21st Century with another vote for Lynn Lundquist, District 59 State Representative. (s) Karole Stockton Prineville In support of Lynn Lundquist To the Editor: I wish to take this opportunity to urge you to cast your vote for Lynn Lundquist as state representative, District 59 at the primary election, May 19. Lynn has operated his own ranching business for over 20 years in Eastern Oregon and understands the issues and problems of this part of the state. Lynn was also elected speaker of the house of representatives for the Oregon legislature in his first term. This tells us how quickly his peers were able to foresee his talents and ability. Operating with a razor thin majority of his own party, he was able to bring divergent groups together to arrive at a successful conclusion to many legislative issues. District 59 and, yes, all of Oregon will be well served by returning Lynn Lundquist to the Oregon legislature for a second term as state representative for District 59. (s) Ray French Morrow County Commissioner To the Editor: Have you heard the admonition "Follow The Money"? Good advice when a question demands an answer. Wes Cooley went to the State Legislature as the Dist. 28 senator and then to Congress as representative from Oregon's Second district. He quickly earned the reputation as a dynamo who read every bill he was to vote on and would not support any bill that he did not believe was best for his constituents, regardless of origin. He did not always please the party leadership by this attitude and he was able to get legislation passed that angered some factions, but I don't see what he did to invite the avalanche of abuse that the news media heaped upon him. The "Bend Bulletin" and "The Oregonian" seemed to lead the charge and there might have been something in Wes' background that could have stirred a minor interest, but I have never seen in my lifetime, such a total commitment to destroy one man. How much, do you suppose it cost? Every aspect of his life was dissected from his elementary school years through college, his marriages, army owner and told her it had been found, cash and cards intact, she was very grateful. These days we hear a lot of negative things about our kids. I wanted everyone to know these guys really did a good thing. (s)Gail Burkenbine Heppner To the Editor: Do you remember the Montgomery Ward catalogs that rated merchandise as good, better and best? It reminds me of the slate of candidates running for Morrow County Judge. All are good, some are better, but one is best. There is one that stands a little taller than the rest of the crowd. No pun intended on his name but I am referring to Terry Tallman. To the Editor: We are writing to you as concerned citizens of central and eastern Oregon with an important message about Speaker Lynn Lundquist and his campaign for re-election in our district. We are outraged by the personal attacks and negative campaigning against our house speaker. We think it critical for you to know that these attacks on Lynn are funded by Portlanders who want to discredit Lynn and attempt to influence politics in this area for their gain. First, we would like to speak to Lynn's integrity. We have known him for a long time and have followed his work in the legislature. He is a man of his word. We have watched him repeatedly choose principle over politics - a rare quality in politicians. You may have seen a recent "Oregonian" columnist attacking Lynn's truthfulness. He is simply attacking Lynn's strongest attribute. Lynn's integrity and square dealing with folks are hallmarks of his public service, business and private life. Secondly, we want to wam you about what is happening in this district campaign. Lynn's opponent is being managed and backed by a Portland motel mogul named Mark Hemstreet and his sidekick, Don Mclntire. Hemstreet has publicly announced that he's going to spend enough money to "topple To the Editor: How refreshing it is to have a new candidate who is willing and brave enough to question the traditional tax and spend policies of our past and present legislators. Tan Hermens is an experienced teacher who knows why our students are not performing as well as they should. She knows that more money does not necessarily guarantee a solid education. She knows that our children need to be taught the own district. 1 never gave it much thought at the time, but now I'm wondering if it wasn't a pretty good idea. I'm sure Greg Walden is a fine person and a staunch Republican who would do a fine job in Washington. However, after listening to Perry Atkinson state his position on all of the issues, I believe he is the best man to represent Eastern Oregon. The difference in topography, industry, density of population, level of income, style of living and other factors make it imperative that we elect a congressman who understands our lifestyle and will truly represent the interests of Eastern Oregon in Washington. So, if you want a congressman who will represent Eastern Oregon instead of Multnomah County and Western Oregon, I urge you to vote for Perry Atkinson. Investigate where he stands on all of the issues. You'll find he has our interests at heart. A vote for Atkinson is a vote for Eastern Oregon. During their third term, the Strahms planted two new churches by forming and training Filipino church planting teams. "Training" was the key work for them as they both taught courses at the International School of Theology in Manila. "We want to go beyond just adding new churches," report the Strahms. "We also want to multiply new churches through others." They also taught in Bible schools and trained lay-ministers at a Bible institute. Mr. Strahm organized and Mrs. Strahm edited materials for a seminar which was used to train over 100 church planting teams. The Strahms plan to assist in the mobilization of Hungarian ministers. She will write curriculum for Biblical extension courses and he will tram both theology students and lay- ministers in church planting skills. They hope to join others in facilitating a Hungarian missionary movement that will begin in Hungary and spread to neighboring nations. The Strahms are scheduled to leave for Hungary in July 1998. Hemstreet seems to think his money can "buy" this race and with it control over the politics of our area. Do not be misled by this smear job. The accusations against Lynn and his service on our behalf are lies and distortions. Lynn has received Senator Gordon Smith's and Congressman Bob Smith's strong endorsements. And he has ours. There are good reasons we support Lynn. We know him, we know his record and we know how hard he has worked on behalf of central and eastern Oregon. As speaker of the house, Lynn is in a powerful position to benefit our area and all of Oregon. We need to keep him there. The "Bulletin" and its affiliates are supposed to be a business as is "The Oregonian", but there is no way they could have sold enough extra papers to pay that sort of expense.
