Chanty McElhgott reported on the Positive School Action Com mittee. Students of the month for February were Katie Bacon and Shawn Moon. The club made $79 on their silent bake sale. The middle school voted Caitlin Orem and Cody Grubaugh students of the month. Advisor Steve Schaber reported they are trying to redo the system for choosing students and he is working with the com mittee on that. The middle school planned a dance Thursday, March 19. Dean Robinson gave a favor able report on the testing that took place in February. He said the parent snacks were a success and he felt the testing atmosphere was outstanding. Anne Morter, as a parent vol unteer, will publish a newsletter to inform parents and community people what is going on at lone schools. It was agreed the news letter would be a good way to contact parents regarding the two openings on the council at the end o f this school year. M aureen Krebs and Jen McElligott’s terms expire and, although they can be reelected, they encourage other parents to get involved. It was also noted that according to coun cil by-laws, community or busi ness people may also apply for membership to the council. Several students were recog nized for their accomplishments. Jessica Krebs will be taking an all-expense paid trip to Washing ton D.C., New York and Canada. She won the trip, sponsored by the International Order of the Odd Fellows Lodge, by placing in a United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth speech contest. Erin Crowell, Miranda McElhgott and Mary Weaver also competed and will each receive a $50 U.S. sav ings bond for their efforts. The girls’ and boys’ basketball teams were recognized for their accomplishments this year, as well as the middle school students who supported the teapis at the district tournament. Future Business Leaders of America members Jessica Krebs, Jenny Sullivan and Jeremiah McElhgott will represent lone in the state competition in Portland. The lone eighth grade class competed in the Heppner Elks Lodge Americanism Poster Con test. Amellia Peck placed first and Salli McElhgott, second. They both were aw arded savings bonds. The Tears of Joy Theatre pro gram, Bridge of Gods, was pre sented to grades K-12. The pro gram is based on Klickitat Indian tales and was funded by the Na tional Endowment for the Arts. Teachers Betty Rietmann and Linda Jones will attend an in-ser vice, “Reading More and Loving It,” Tuesday, April 21 in Portland. The Oregon Writing Festival is May 1-2 in Portland. Three lone students will be chosen to attend. Outdoor School for sixth graders will be May 4-7 at the Tupper Guard Station. The next site council meeting will be Wednesday, April 8 at 5 p.m. in room one o f the high school. Fifty-four participants gathered at Riverside High School to learn the basics of public speaking at Speakeasy held on February 16. Gilliam County Extension agent Cindy Osterlund conducted the public speaking field day. Mike Street, Condon, and Rachell Homer and Christi VanGorder, both of Boardman, helped with the workshop by giving example presentations. Junior leader, Shannon Wetherell, Boardman, assisted by leading several speaking activities. Dottie Reynolds, Condon, was in charge of registration. During the round robin finale, all participants took their place before an audience of about 65 and delivered a team presentation.
