Local home school students and their parents attended a hands-on poetry workshop led by noted Oregon poets Carlos Reyes and Edna Kovacs, both of Portland, Monday, March 2, at the Oregon Trail Library's Heppner branch. Presented by the Oregon State Poetry Association, in partnership with the Center for the Book at the Oregon State Library, the workshop was open to children between the ages of six and 12. Each child was accompanied by an adult mentor- -parent, grandparent or close family friend—who participated in the day's activities. Between 9 a.m. and noon, children and their adult mentors created poems under the guidance of the two poets. From 1 to 3 p.m., library staff and volunteers joined poets and participants in producing a booklet of workshop poems. Reading lists and follow-up exercises will be furnished to encourage new poets to continue writing. A published poet for over 40 years, Carlos Reyes has been the editor and publisher of Trask House Books since 1964. He is one of the founding editors of "Hubbub: A Magazine of Poetry" and is on the editorial board of "Ar Mhuin na Muice" ("On a Pig's Back"), a journal of Irish news and literature. A Yaddo Fellow and recipient of an Oregon Arts Commission fellowship in poetry, he is the author of three books of poems, "The Shingle Weaver's Journal" (1980), a finalist for the Elliston Prize; "Nighmarks" (1990), and "A Suitcase Full of Crows" (1995), a finalist in the 1996 Oregon Book Awards. He also has authored nine chapbooks, one of which, "Oilean Agus Oilean Eile" ("Two Islands"), was selected as a finalist in the 1993 and 1995 National Poetry Series Competition. His poems have appeared in such literary periodicals as "The Antioch Review", "Chelsea", and "PoetLore" and in numerous anthologies. Edna Kovacs has a masters degree in education and is working on her Ph.D. in multi cultural education and expressive arts. She has taught writing, literature and oral history at all educational levels from elementary school through college and in special programs for exceptional children, senior citizens and ESL (English as a second language) students. A published poet since 1980, she is the author of "Writing Across Cultures: A Handbook on Writing Poetry and Lyrical Prose" and two chapbooks of haiku, "Mandalas, ” winner of the Cicada Chapbook Award, and "Aquarelles. She has received literary and education outreach grants from Regional Arts and Culture Council and the Oregon Arts Commission. Reyes and Kovacs each donated a book to the Heppner library. Reyes donated "Oh Poetry! Oh Poesía!: Poems of Oregon and Peru", which included one of his poems written in English and Spanish, and Kovacs donated "Writing Across Cultures: A handbook on writing poetry and lyncal prose." The workshop was one of 14 such workshops made possible at widely-scattered Oregon libraries by grants from the Brian G. and Gwyneth Gamble Booth Fund and the Edna L Holmes Fund of The Oregon Community r Foundation and The Collins Foundation. Oregon Trail Library District director Tony Chavez, who was on hand for the workshop, says that he believes it is the first such workshop for home-schoolers in the state. Other libraries in the pilot project are located in Boardman, a branch of the Oregon Trail Library District, Alsea, Baker City, Cascade Locks, Florence, Klamath Falls, Langlois, Molalla, Monmouth, Port Orford, Sherwood and The Dalles, Other participating poets are Ingrid Wendt, Ralph Salisbury, George Venn, Primus St. John, Christopher Howell, Steven R. Jones, Paulann Petersen, Ann Staley, Doreen Gandy Wiley, Tim Barnes, Joseph Millar and Patrick Mikulec. Founded in 1956, OSPA is Oregon's oldest statewide literary organization. Its mission is "to bring together, and nurture, the widest possible community of Oregon poets; to help Oregon poets, young and old, develop their talents and skills; to stimulate, at the grassroots level, a statewide appreciation of poetry; and, to raise public awareness of Oregon poets, past and present." Woods. McElligott, 16, suffered a "tunnel" injury to the chest when a bullet from a .22 caliber semi automatic pistol passed completely through his chest, nicking the right lobe of his lung, but missing his other vital organs. He was taken by ambulance to Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Heppner and then flown to St. Charles Medical St. Patrick's Church plans Lenten events religious education classes will present the stations and lead the congregation in selected prayers on Sunday, March 8, at 7 p.m. The students were also responsible for this reflective ceremony last Sunday. All students from grade one through eight are encouraged to participate in the activity, said Father Condon. The Lenten Season began on February 25, Ash Wednesday. On the Sundays of Lent, which, "promotes a heightened awareness o f prayer", St. Patrick Catholic Church will present the Stations of the Cross. "These stations," says Father Condon, "represent the agony of the Lord's journey to Golgotha and his crucifixion." Students of the St. Patrick Center in Bend. Steve Crum, 16, also of lone, was charged with Assault III in connection with the shooting. It was originally reported that Crum would face Assault I charges. Crum was also charged with Theft I, since the gun had allegedly been stolen from the home of his father Montie Crum, and unauthorized possession of a shortened weapon allegedly found at the residence. Crum was in custody at the Umatilla County Juvenile Detention Center in Pendleton. A jurisdictional hearing was to be held this week. Woods said earlier that the shooting appeared to be unintentional, resulting from the two youths "horsing around". C om e S h a re W ith i rs A t Program set for W illow C reek B a p tist C l lu rch lone students Shirley Harris, Heppner, and Mike Lynch of Lexington, found the hidden shamrock Tuesday, and are the winners of a gold coin donated by the Bank of Eastern Oregon. The coin was taped to the bottom of a bench on Willow Street. Following are the answers to the clues given in the newspaper the past two weeks. Clue number one carrie from a common 1902 photo of Morrow County Pioneer stockmen. No. 63 was Thomas Quaid, so the search began on Quaid street. Clue number two indicated that you should take a left at the intersection of Main and Quaid street, then learn a lesson at a place that educated old kids. Democrat Gulch school house in the park is indicated by the donkey and a canyon. The fast track clue was a mortician's generosity. Pat Sweeney donated stone benches to the city several years ago. The shamrock was under one of these benches. Clues for the next two weeks would have led searchers from the park to this bench. Thanks for playing, and see you again next year.
