Mustang varsity girls lose top CB C spot By Molly Rhoa The Heppner Mustang varsity girls failed to capitalize on their chance to take over sole possession of the top spot in the Columbia Basin Conference by losing 43-49 to the Weston- McEwen Tiger-Scots on Friday, January 30. This loss puts the Mustangs into a tie for second place in the CBC with the Sherman County Huskies. The Mustangs jumped out to a 8-2 lead but the Tiger-Scots scrambled back and, led by Erika Smock who hit six of her eventual game high 13 points, finished the first quarter leading 14-13. Lexi Matteson scored all seven of her points in the second quarter to help Heppner pull ahead by two, 23-21, at the half. The Mustangs maintained this slim margin in the third quarter with both teams putting in 11 points. With Annie Hisler and Jill Barber both fouling out in the fourth quarter the Mustangs' game unraveled as they struggled to get the ball down the court against the press. The Tiger-Scots tied the score at point 34 and then again at 41 and then pulled out ahead. Trailing 43-44 with one minute remaining, the Mustangs sent Weston-McEwen's Bethany Hansell behind the chanty stripe. Hansell missed the shot, but the Tiger-Scots controlled the rebound and spread the floor. Fouling with the intent to regain possession the Mustangs continued to be stymied by the press and were unable to score again. Heppner sent the Tiger-Scots to the freethrow line 23 times for 11 points, while Weston-McEwen's hands-off defense only allowed the Mustangs to step behind the line twice for two points. Casey Ingraham led Heppner's scoring with 12 points. Hisler put in six points and handed out five assists. Mindy Bmschus pulled down six rebounds for Mustangs. Smock's 13 points led all scorers and Hansell added 12 for the Tiger-Scots. Mustang JV boys split over weekend By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustangs JV boys' basketball team split their games last weekend, losing to the Weston McEwen TigerScots 53- 47, Saturday, Jan. 31. The game against the TigerScots proved to be two games as the Mustangs jumped out to a 12-6 lead after one quarter and 22-10 lead at halftime. The Mustangs went cold in the second half and were outscored 35 to 14, including 17-2 in the third quarter. The Mustangs were lead by Michael Schonbachler with 11 points, including one three-point field goal. Blake Knowles and Cody Bellamy added five points apiece. The Tiger-Scots overcame an eight- point first quarter deficit to win by two, 41-39. Ashley Ropp hit a trey to start the game and the Mustangs bolted to a 17-9 after one quarter. With both teams scoring just six points in the second period, Heppner maintained the eight- point margin going into the half time break. Using platoon substitutions and an effective full court press in the third quarter, the Tiger-Scots nipped away at the lead and the score at the end of three was 32- 27, Mustangs. In the final period the Tiger Scots dropped into a zone defense to shut down Heppner's inside game and went on to outscore the Mustangs 14-7 to squeak out the win. Ropp had a big game, finishing with 10 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and an assist. Kathleen Greenup led all scorers with 13 points and rounded up seven rebounds. Amy Papineau had six points, eight boards and two assists, while Jessica Maben put in seven points, pulled down six rebounds, dished out two assists and blocked a shot. Weston-McEwen put out a balanced attack with eight of their players scoring.. Becky Brito and Becky Sparks shared the top scoring with seven points each. Arlington beats lone IMS boys By Colin McElligott The lone Cardinals went to Arlington on Jan. 23 to take on the Arlington Honkers, but lone came out empty handed with the score lone, 29, Arlington, 44. lone came out at the start of the game looking like they would come out with a win. But as luck would have it, Arlington scored 10 unanswered points at the end of the second quarter, to give them a very definite lead. The score at the end of the half was lone-10, Arlington-23. The Cardinals came out after half-time looking revived, after a very motivational speech in the locker room. They played defense harder than they had during the first half and even let their outside shooter Mike Radie have one or two shots just for the fun of it. The Cards prevailed by a mere one point, thanks to a spectacular shooting performance by lone's Mike Radie. The game was close from the start with each team stretching each other's capabilities to the limits. The lead fluctuated during the initial minutes of the game, but neither team could pull away, ending the first quarter at t a tie, 8-8. Both teams fell into an offensive slump during the second quarter, but the Cards managed to outscore Echo, 4-3. lifting lone to 12-11 half time advantage. As a result of a very motivating speech by coach Holland in the locker room at half time, his players came out with the poise that they obtained during the first part of their season. TTie Cards jumped out to a six-point lead, giving them a boost for the final quarter. Mike Radie canned three treys before Echo began to pressure his outside shot. Radie's shooting boosted the Cards to a win, although the Cougars did steal the lead for a brief moment. Morgan 2 3 1 1 C McElligott - 1 1 1 The varsity Mustang girls overwhelmed the Stanfield Tigers, 58-12, on Saturday, January 31, with every member of the Heppner team contributing to the bottom line. The Mustangs ran to a 20-pomt lead after the first eight minutes and increased the margin to 32 points at the half. The sluggish Tigers managed to score six points in the third quarter, but Heppner answered with 17 and the period ended with the Mustangs ahead 53-10. The final stanza scoring was fairly quiet with a total of seven points scored. Annie Hisler led all scorers with 11 points. She also came up with four rebounds, four steals and three assists. Jill Barber scored nine points and handed out two assists, while Lexi Matteson hit for eight points, snatched seven steals and dished out two assists. Heppner is 5-2 in league action and tied with Sherman County for second place. This weekend the Mustangs face a potentially tough slate, hosting the Pilot Rock Rockets on Friday, February 6, and then traveling to Moro on Saturday to take on the Sherman County Huskies. For more infor mation call 676-9675. photo by Joyce Hughes Chris Paullus plays tough defense against Stanfield By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustangs traveled to Stanfield on Saturday, Jan 31 and used a big second half to defeat the Tigers, 52-51. A Chris Anthony rebound and put back tied the game at 2-2 before the Tigers pulled away to lead 17-8 at the end of one. The Tigers continued their hot shooting and led 25-15 before a 3-point play by Derek Gunderson and a basket by Tim Dickenson pulled the Mustangs to within 27-20 at halftime. Dickenson kept up his scoring by making the next six points for the Mustangs and a free throw by Casey Evans upped the score to 31-27. Both teams went back and forth as Ryan Matteson came off the bench to hit two 3-pomt field goals to pull the Mustangs to within 3, 38-35 at the end of three periods of play. Jared Eckman hit two free throws to pull the Mustangs to within one to start the fourth quarter. Gunderson mad one of two free throws to tie the score at 40-40 with 5:51 left to play. Gunderson then hit a three point field goal to give the Mustangs their first lead of the game at 43- 42 with 5:01 left. Anthony then hit a jump shot and two free Wells with 18 points. The Mustangs held the league scoring leader Sherman to 12 points, eight below his average. The Mustangs will play Pilot Rock at home on Friday, Feb. 6, for their next game. Anthony hit one of two freethrows for a score of 52- 48 with :15 left. A long three pointer by the Tigers' Corey Sherman made the final score 52- 51 with the Mustangs getting much needed win. The Mustangs hit 10 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter and ended up making 17 of 27 for the game. The Mustangs were again led by Dickenson with 17 points. Anthony finished with 15 points. Gunderson and Matteson ended up with seven points each.
