You've heard of Candy Stripe volunteers. How about a volunteer named Spot? Spot, a dog of "mixed heritage” who makes his home at the Steve and Molly Rhea residence in Heppner, is a willing volunteer at Pioneer Memorial Nursing. Spot arrives at the nursing home every Tuesday around 8:30 a.m., courtesy of Molly, who is director of Pioneer Memorial Home Health, and stays until around 11:30 a.m., visiting with the residents and taking advantage of any goodies that might cross his path. "He's a good dog," says Tonya Jones, PMNH activities director. "He usually lays and sleeps. He'll chase his ball and he scarfs everything up on the floor." "He's a vacuum cleaner," says Susie Hansen, who also works with the residents. Molly picks him up to take him home before lunch is served, just in case he gets a little too eager for a treat. "They (the residents) like looking at him," adds Tonya. "The only one that doesn't like him is Joy, the nursing home cat. When he comes, she just runs up on a bed." Spot has been a welcome addition to the nursing home since last August. Resources available for older adults The Administration on Aging in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services provides a directory assistance service to help families locate resources for older adults throughout the country.
