FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Tim es, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, January 7 ,1 9 9 8 Lady Cardinals b6at Lady Vikings, 57-36 By Kara Miller The lone High School basket ball teams travelled to Umatilla for junior varsity and varsity ac tion on Tuesday, Dec. 30. The Lady Cardinals challenged the 2A team with quick-feet de fense and fast-paced offense to win the varsity game 57-36. The tip was won by the Lady Vikings’ Jenny Tvel. The Cards answered by turning the ball over, then the Vikings returned the favor. First points for the Lady Car dinals were from Niki Sullivan on an assist from Brenda Burright. The momentum picked up as the Cards continue with four unan swered points from the field, but they also gave Umatilla enough trips to the charity line to keep the score close. The free throw shoot ing of the Vikings closed out the first quarter, with lone in the lead, 10-7. Burright jumped out to a quick start in the foul category, gaining three in the first quarter, which torced her to sit out the second on the bench. The Cards opened the second quarter with posses sion, but turned the ball over to send it down to the other end of the court. Getting into bonus early from fouls called against them, the lone defense was in need of an offen sive boost. The Lady Vikings capitalized on the lagging defense of the Cards and continued with to score with their accurate per centage from the free throw line. At halftime, the score was tied at 26-26, and Umatilla had earned 18 of their total from free throws. Beginning the second half, Umatilla received a technical foul for too many players of the court. Nikki McElhgott stepped up to the line for the Cardinals and made both free throws, putting lone in the lead by two. That was the spark that lone needed and they stepped up their swarming defense, which overpowered the Vikings’ guards. The Cards began their third quarter with defense and fast breaks and ended the period of play in the lead, 42-30. The mo mentum didn’t slow as the Lady Cards continued their pressure defense throughout the final eight minutes and they pulled away to a 57-36 win. Heppner Mustangs beat Pirates, 46-41 By Molly R hea Wearing black armbands in honor of Shad Hisler, who was killed in an auto accident, the varsity Mustang girls battled Riverside and their emotions on Saturday, January 4, to finally overtake the Pirates in the fourth quarter, winning 46-41. Starting the game playing a zone defense and looking flat on offense, Heppner trailed 8-10 after the first eight minutes. Things just seemed to go from bad to worse in the second quarter and the Mustangs found themselves down by seven points, 14-21, going into the half time break. A resolute Heppner squad came onto the court for the second half and demonstrated their inner strength by playing some "in your face" basketball. Late in the third quarter the Mustangs tied the game at 25, then pulled ahead to lead by two, 27-25, going into the final period. The fourth quarter was tight, with the score tied several times. The Mustangs sunk 19 points to finish off the Pirates and ended the game with their heads held high. This win improves the varsity win-loss record to 6-3. Jill Barber and Petra Elguezabal shared top scoring for Heppner with 11 points each. Elguezabal also grabbed seven rebounds and three steals. Lexi Matteson put in eight points, scooped three boards, had two assists, a steal and blocked a shot. Mindy Bmchus cleared nine rebounds for the Mustangs.
