All three Morrow county teams (Heppner, lone and Riverside) participated as well as the Imbler Panthers. The Mustangs defeated the Imbler Panthers, 45-35, on Friday evening to advance to the finals. Then on Saturday, Heppner was able to revenge a previous loss to lone and won going away, 59-44, to claim the championship. In Friday evening's first round action Heppner lead from wire to wire. Ahead 11-9 after the first quarter, the Mustangs went into a sagging zone defense and allowed the Panthers only four points in the second quarter. Heppner put in only six points in the third period, but then poured in 17 points in the fourth quarter to ice the win. Annie Hisler had an outstanding game as she hustled in 15 points and three rebounds while dishing out three assists and blocking a shot. Petra Elguezabal scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Mindy Binschus added eight points and pulled down four rebounds. Imbler's Jamie Jo Cant led all scorers with 21 points, while Justine Sieders added 10. lone had an easy time getting past the Riverside Pirates to advance into championship play against the Mustangs. The championship game was tied 9-9 after the first quarter, but after that it was all Mustang with Heppner leading 26-14 at the half and 37-27 after three. Annie Hisler lead the Heppner scorers with 14 points, seven coming from behind the line. Hisler also hustled in two rebounds, two steals and two assists along with blocking a shot. Jill Barber scored 13 points, had six boards, two steals, three assists and a blocked shot. Lexi Matteson put in 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Petra Elguezabal scored six points, had 12 boards and two assists. lone's Brenda Burright lead all scorers with 19 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. These wins improve Heppner's record to 5-3, and the Mustangs will be taking a four game winning streak into January. The Mustangs will again battle the lone Cardinals in their first game of 1998 on January 2. Then on Saturday, January 3, the Heppner teams travel to Boardman to take on the Pirates. In their final preseason game, the Mustangs go to Condon on Tuesday, January 6, seeking revenge over the Blue Devils. This young exciting team has their next game in Heppner Monday, January 5, against the Pilot Rock Rockets. By Marilee McDowell The Mustangs' C-Team traveled to Boardman on Monday, December 15, to compete against the Riverside High School Pirates and they came away with a 39-30 victory. It was a close match-up throughout most of the game with a tie at the half, 22-22. The Mustangs outplayed the Pirates in the fourth quarter with 15 points while the Pirates scored two. Manssa McCabe led the Mustang scoring effort with 11 points, while Lindsey Ward was close behind with eight. San Juanita Elguezabal, Jenni Patton and Mindy Smith each scored four points and Tara Ozment, Krista Adams, Sara Eckman and Mandy Sneddon came up with two points each. Smith dominated the boards with 13 rebounds, while McCabe grabbed nine, Ward and Patton, three apiece, Elguezabal, Ozment and Eckman, two each, Adams and Sneddon, one apiece.
