She could get anything she wanted expect alcohol and lottery tickets. What would you go for, if you had two minutes alone in the supermarket? Bobbi Childers, who won the shopping spree sponsored by the Morrow County Fair Committee, went after cookies, sugar, flour, a couple of hams, canned cherries and other baking items for a total of $337. Churches to hold Christmas services L exington Church B aptist The Lexington Baptist Church will present a special Christmas program on Sunday, December 21, at 11 a.m. The program will have a play portraying the Biblical account of Christ's birth. Both children and adults will be involved in the story. Several special musical numbers will also be featured in the program. A string quartet comprised of Laura McElligott, cello; Kathryn Unruh and Ben Stillman, violins; and Matt Jepsen, bass violin, will perform and also accompany the children singing. In addition, a harpist, flute players and younger violinists will be highlighted in the program. Everyone is welcome to attend this special Christmas service. lone United Church of Christ The lone United Church of Christ will have a Christmas Eve Candlelight Service on Wednes day, Dec. 24 at 5 p.m. This will be a special celebration of Christ mas by the entire congregation. All ages will participate and the choir will sing several Christmas carol selections. Everyone is in vited to attend the service. Church school children ages kindergarten through sixth grade will practice their song for the program on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 9 a.m. and again during their church school time on Sunday, Dec. 21 at 10 a.m. All classes will meet at that time on the Sunday before Christmas. Valby Lutheran Church Valby Lutheran Church in Heppner U n i t e d lone will have their children's Methodist Church Sunday school Christmas The Heppner United Methodist Church choir will present a Christmas cantata, "The Gifts of Christmas", at the church on Thursday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m. "The message includes the gift of Jesus Christ but suggests other gifts we have received that bring forth God's salvation and love for the world," said a church spokesperson. Participants include soloists Rita Hedman and Cara Osmin; Amie Hedman on guitar; Carley Drake on piano; narrator Al Brazell and director Jean Brazell. A lighting of the candles will conclude the service. All friends and families are welcome to join the service. St. Patrick Church program on Sunday, December 21, at 7 p.m. On Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24, at 6 p.m. a candelight worship with Holy Communion will be held M a jo rie Vierson to celebrate 9 0 th "1 like to bake," Childers said after catching her breath at the checkout counter. The contest was a fund raiser for the proposed multipurpose building at the fairgrounds. |n the Service Marine Pfc. Steven C. Saletzki, son Dianna and stepson of Gerald A. Hamer of Heppner, iccently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. Saletzki successfully completed 12 weeks of training designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally. Saletzki and fellow recruits began their training at 5 a.m., by running three miles and performing calisthenics. In addition to the physical conditioning program, Saletzki spent numerous hours in classroom and field assignments which included learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons training. They performed close order drill and operated as a small infantry unit during field training. Saletzki and other recruits also received instruction on the Marine Corps' core values - "honor, courage and commitment, and what the words mean in guiding personal and professional conduct," said a Hometown News Center release. Saletzki and others ended the training phase with "The Crucible", a 54-hour team effort, problem solving evolution which culminated with an emotional ceremony in which the recruits were presented the Marine Corps Emblem and were addressed as "Marines" for the first time since boot camp began. Saletzki joins 41,000 men and women who will enter the Marine Corps this year from all over the country. He is a 1997 graduate of Bakersfield High School. Herbert Richard Davidson, 49, of Hermiston, died Tuesday, De cember 9, 1997 at his home. Private family bunal of cre- mains was held on Thursday, December 11, 1997, at the Lex ington Cemetery. A rosary ser vice was held on Dec. 11 at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Hermiston. Mr. Davidson was bom at Pen dleton on October 15, 1948 to Robert and M ildred Pollard Davidson. He grew up in Lexing ton and graduated from lone High School in 1966. He entered the U.S. Army in August, 1967 to 1973. He served two terms in Vietnam in radio communications. After the ser vice, he moved to Hermiston and lived there until present. Mr. Davidson is survived by two brothers, Robert H. Davidson of Boardman and Gregory P. Davidson of San Francisco; three sisters, Dora Sue Viall of Board- man, Beverly J.A. Flint o f Beaverton and Anita L. Davidson o f Arlington, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents. Bums Mortuary of Hermiston was in charge of arrangements. Bernice T. Nash Bernice Nash, 83, of Heppner, died Sunday, November 30,1997 at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Heppner. The funeral was held Thursday, December 4, 1997 at the United Methodist Church in Heppner, with concluding service and burial following at the Heppner Masonic Cemetery. She was bom September 18, 1914 at Genesco, North Dakota to Stanley and Mary Schweck Nogowski. She attended school at Forman, North Dakota. She moved to Oregon follow ing her m arriage to H arold Jensen. Mr. Jensen died in 1937. She lived in Hood River on two occasions and had been a perma nent resident of Heppner since 1948. On January 10, 1938, she mar ried Lincoln Nash at Vancouver, Washington. Mrs. Nash enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, play ing pinochle and bunco and was a favorite babysitter at both Hood River and Heppner. Mrs. Nash was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Degree of Honor and a past mem ber of the Rebekah Lodge. Survivors include son, Lyle Jensen of La Grande; daughters, Mary Ann Palmer of lone, Shirley Connor of Heppner and Rose Gatt of Hanford, California; brothers, Peter Nogowski of Hood River and Ray Nogowski in Michigan; sisters, Lois Archer of Rochester, Minnesota and Margie Tostenson of Sacramento, California; 17 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lincoln, in 1989; by her parents; a sister, Leona; and brothers, Vincent and Al.
