Niki Sullivan attends O LCC ceremony
By Nova Riatmann
Niki Sullivan attended the Life
Lights award ceremony at the
OLCC (Oregon Liquor Control
Commission) in the Portland area
November 24, for winning third
place in the OLCC essay contest.
Sullivan is a junior at lone High
School. The essay contest was
on how students can help
improve the Oregon alcohol
education program to reduce teen
drinking. In addition to attending
the awards ceremony and
reading her essay, Sullivan also
won a SI 00 savings bond.
"It's neat that the OLCC is
devoted enough to organize this
event every year," says Sullivan.
"It was a good experience."
The OLCC has an essay contest
every year to promote alcohol*
education and to let students
speak their opinions.
"Sober Solutions" campaign announced
Heppner Police Chief Douglas
Rathbun has announced the
beginning of the 1997 "Sober
Solutions" campaign.
Rathbun says that last year in
Oregon 216 people were killed in
alcohol-related traffic crashes
and drinking and driving remains
the leading cause of death among
teenagers, not to mention an
increase in the number of crashes
and fatalities during the holiday
season.
"Sober Solutions" was
developed as a holiday campaign
aimed at raising awareness of the
risks of drinking and driving.
The campaign features a 27-page
guide highlighting non-alcoholic
beverage recipes from 39
restaurants and associations
statewide as well as tips for
responsible entertaining and safe
driving during the holiday season
and throughout the year.
"Sober Solutions" brochures
are now available at several
locations throughout the city.
