Wes Hickey (directly above letter “ S ” ) with Morrow County Courthouse personnel By Merlyn Robinson Smooth sailing has a new meaning for those Morrow County Courthouse officials and other guests who were recently wined and dined aboard a luxurious yacht. After boarding at the Umatilla Marina, passengers were treated to a buffet lunch while cruising on the placid, sunlit waters of the Columbia River. This one and one half million dollar dream boat, "The Crystal Dolphin", is owned by Ray Hickey, the retired owner of Tidewater Barge Lines—a major cargo shipper on the Columbia and Snake rivers. On hand to greet about 75 guests were Tidewater officials including Ray Hickey, the son of Ray Hickey, along with Skip Hart, Mike Wnke and Jerry Shrives. "It's Tidewater's way of saying thank you," says Wes Hickey, who greeted river port commissioners and officials from nearby Columbia River cities. Tidewater has close ties with these inland areas by providing transportation for various crops and produce. Tidewater was also responsible for the development of Finley Buttes regional landfill in North Morrow County. The Crystal Dolphin is the culmination of Ray Hickey's dream. He said he envisioned an elegant boat with beautiful furnishings that "turned people's heads." The boat was built by Aluminum Boats by Jean Lafitte in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1990. Based at a private dock at the west side of Bumside Bridge in Portland, the yacht has become well known for elegant and elite entertainment with charter cruises, festive holiday events and dockside meeting accommodations. Charter rates vary from $525 to $850 per hour with additional costs assessed for catered meals, hosted beverages and entertainment. Throughout Nov. 7-a Crystal Dolphin the year it also offers public cruise experiences with varied Northwest sightseeing adventures and overnight on-shore hotel accommodations. The ship's name was derived from two large crystal dolphins prominently displayed on board. They were a gift to Ray Hickey from his family after he had admired their beauty while in Hawaii. Inside this elegant ship are three fully enclosed decks that are climate controlled via heating and air conditioning. Plush furnishings and large viewing windows enhance the decor. This 84 foot by 24-foot vessel also has a large open-air top deck for panoramic sightseeing The yacht weights 91 tons with the hull and superstructure constructed of aluminum. Twin 500-horsepower Caterpillar engines supply power and diesel generators provide electrical power. The ship can reach up to 14 knots using the latest in navigational equipment including radar, depth sounder and radios. For seven years this yacht has offered scenic tours, lavish food, music and entertainment for private parties that have included corporate executives, overseas delegations and celebraties. Rhonda Thornton, customer relations director for Crystal Dolphin Enterprises, arranges bookings and details-even to laundering towels for the ship's five restrooms. She laughed about trying to be helpful for the on-board wedding of ice skater Tonya Harding. An unfortunate glitch was that Harding’s wedding dress train caught and became detached just as she was entering the lounge for the ceremonv.
