Heppner, Oregon W ednesday, September 24,1997 St. Patrick's Senior Center , Bulletin Board There were 81 present for the senior dinner Sept. 17 and nine meals were home delivered. Members of the Christian Missionary Fellowship served. A special meeting of the Senior Board met following the meal. Blood pressures were taken before the meal. The menu for dinner Oct. 1 will be chicken-rice soup, bologna roll ups, rolls, salad and dessert. Members of the Seventh-day Adventist and Nazarene churches will serve. Hearing aid service will be given at 10 a.m. and blood pressures taken at 11 a.m. Eye glasses will be straightened after lunch in the dining room. The Meal Site Committee will meet at 1 p.m.. Thirty people over 60, none under 60 and two home delivered meals were served for the senior center breakfast Friday, Sept. 19. The menu for the Friday breakfast Sept. 26 will be pancakes and sausage, hot and cold cereal, orange juice, milk coffee and tea. The Red Cross held a blood drawing Sept 16 at the senior center which was well attended. One table of pinochle was played Fri., Sept 19. A reception will be held at the Senior Center in honor of Marguerite Messenger's 95th birthday Saturday, Sept 27, from 2 to 5 p.m.. CHAMBER MAIN STREET NEWS WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 24,1997 brought to you by The Heppner Chamber of Commerce (541) 676-5536 MAIN STREET WEEKLY REPORT -HUNTING SEASON APPROACHES. Weaver Construction hopes to have all curbing done on the East side of Main Street by the end of this week. If this happens, paving will occur on Main Street during the first of next week. Weaver hopes to be done with all of the base lifts of asphalt on the East sides and in the middle of the street by next week. There is a possibility paving will occur Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of next week, the first day of deer season. Everyone should be prepared for this. Two lanes of traffic will always remain open although there may be short delays while pavers are moved from one side of the street to the other. Weaver and ODOT have agreed to try and have parking available on the East side of Main Street by the end of next week. The Chamber of Commerce will develop a flyer which the flaggers for the traffic will hand out to let hunters know the situation as they come into town. The flyer will let them know where to get cash, groceries and hunting supplies, where to park and how to get to restaurants. Everyone will need to cooperate and be ready to help out-of-towners find their way through town, through our stores and to the mountains. If we work together we can make this an opportunity rather than an obstacle. -FINISH. Both ODOT and Weaver still expect the project to be done, this year, hopefully by November. If the bulk of the paving is done next week, downtown will see side streets and holes in the sidewalk sections filled in. The paving bricks between the sidewalk and curbs will be installed in the next few weeks. We should start to see whole blocks being finished. The last lift of paving, the finish coat is weather dependent. However, everyone remains hopeful it will be done this calendar year. -BP STATION. Cal and Bev Sherman raised concerns with the entrance ways to their service station. ODOT and Weaver agreed to work with the Shermans to have the station entries ready for the start of hunting season. This is another example of how useful the Monday meetings at Yaws can be. If you have problems with Mam Street Project, bring it to Yaws at 11 a.m. Monday. Don't suffer in silence. -SIDEWALK DE-ICERS. Concern was raised that downtown merchants are having some problems locating sidewalk de-icers appropriate for use on the new sidewalks. Using the wrong de-icer will cause the finish on the walk to disappear. Remember, once the walk is put in, it is the landowner’s responsibility to maintain or the sidewalk will be replaced at landowner's expense. Gary Marks asked Brent Reynolds of ODOT for a recommendation of a product that can be used on the new sidewalks. Results will appear in later issues. -BILL KUHN reported on the Main Street meeting while Claudia Hughes and John Edmundson attended a regional Chamber conference in Pendleton. -TREES are gone unless more spaces become available. Our local FFA group, under the direction of Lynn Harmonson, (a landscaper in his previous life) has volunteered to help prepare the soil and assist with planting the trees when the time is right. We look forward to FFA's greatly appreciated volunteer efforts. -RETAILERS and all participants in the "Hard Hat Luxury Vacation Give-away", please continue to encourage shoppers to pick up a punch card. The opportunity to enter will run approximately three to four more weeks. If there are other new or renewing Chamber members who wish to handle the punch cards and don't have them at this time, give the office a call. -HUNTER HAND OUTS will be distributed by ODOT next week to assist hunters in finding parking and the merchandise they need. Merchants, retailers, etc., please visit with. Claudia at the Chamber right away if you have suggestions for this handout. The purpose of your Chamber is to create an environment where business and community thrive, but we do best when we have input from the experts. -CHRISTMAS LIGHTING & LIGHTING EVENT SUGGESTION NEEDED. With no decorations for Main Street yet, your ideas are needed. We want Heppner to look festive and to have a special lighting event. Wouldn't the Courthouse look fantastic outlined in lights? The "Card Copy" comes out weekly at the high school and informs students what their peers have accomplished during the past week. Jenny and Len started working on the newspaper during their first period business lab class taught by Mark Bird. Their first edition came out September 5, and a new "Card Copy" has been appearing every Thursday since; this week's will be their fifth edition. Some of the articles in the paper include: game summaries and scores, horoscopes, articles on new students and information that students need to know. Students can even put in personals or letters to the editor in the school paper which adds to the personal level of the paper. "I think it is a good idea for Jenny and Len to be doing this," says Bird. "It gives students a chance to read about what is happening at their school." "It's great that those students have the freedom in their schedule and the ability to do that. They're doing a great job and are learning more each time," adds Jim Raible, an English teacher at lone, and a fan of the "Card Copy". The students at lone also think highly of their school's paper. "I really think that Jenny and Len have put in a lot of effort in creating a newspaper that's enthusiastic and educational," says Kate Garrett, a senior at lone. "I'm always super excited when "Card Copy" comes out Benefit golf tournament The Boardman Child Development Center's benefit golf tournament will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, at Wilson's Willow Run Golf Course in Boardman. Registration is at 8 a.m. with tee-time at 8:45. Teams competing include: David Green's Team, Riverside High School, Lamb-Weston, Kegler's Sentry Market and Big Foot. Cost for the four person scramble is $25 per person. Raffle tickets are available for six tickets for $5. A putting contest will be held with three balls for $1. Lunch will be served at a cost of $3.50 each. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Boardman Child Development Center.
