The man was in the living room in a chair with two handguns. Three children, 12, 8, and 6 were asleep in the bedroom of the residence. MCSO arrested Douglas Alan Bemus, 33, for menacing and pointing a firearm at another. He was lodged at the UCSO jail. MSCO received a report of a dog barking in Imgon. To Boardman Police Dept., a report of neighbors butchering pigs, which stunk. MCSO received a report of a man driving drunk toward Heppner or Hermiston. To Boardman Police Dept, a report of an employee at the BP station in Boardman who had burned a hand. The employee was transported by private vehicle to Good Shepherd Community Hospital in Hermiston. To Boardman Police Dept., a report of juveniles riding a four- wheeler in Boardman without t helmets. MCSO received a report from a man in Boardman who said his wife had taken their car and he wanted to press charges against her. The couple had had an argument and the wife left. To Boardman Police Dept., a report of an older boy picking on a younger one in Boardman. The boys were friends, but the situation got out of hand. To Heppner Police Dept., a report from a man in Heppner who said his ex-wife took his property. To Boardman Police Dept., a report of cameras found at a residence in Boardman. The Morrow County Sheriffs office (MCSO) received and responded to the following calls or referred them to another agency during the past two weeks: Sept. 15- MCSO received a report of a .243 rifle and a .45 revolver were stolen from a residence in lone. MCSO received a report of a boy brandishing a hand gun at kids in Irrigon. MCSO received a report of people using drugs in front of their daughter in Irrigon. A vehicle had hit the steam pipe line the Port of Morrow is installing. James A. Boyd, 64, was cited for dnving while suspended. His vehicle was towed. Sept. 16- MCSO received a request for a Heppner ambulance for a person with either the flu or food poisoning. MCSO receive a report o f a person in a maroon mazda PU snagging fish at a fish hatchery. Oregon State Police reported a dog biting two kids in Irrigon. They tied the dog up. MCSO received a report of a shop and motor home in Irrigon being burglarized the previous night. MCSO received a report of items being stolen from a boat at the Imgon Manna. MCSO received a request for a deputy to interview an abuse case in Imgon. Heppner Police Department received a report of a suspicious male hiding when cars went by on the Heppner-Condon Highway. Boardman Police Department responded to a report of an adult male dressed in karate attire with a big knife strapped to his leg in Boardman. The man was reported to follow women into the women's restroom and was harassing travelers, sitting on the roof of the bathrooms, talking to himself and acting strange. Heppner Police Department received a report of a car that swerved to avoid a dog. The car got stuck in a sewer ditch in front of Heppner City Park. MCSO received a report of lights flashing on and off at the new apartment in Irrigon. The power had gone off and had come back on. Sept. 17- Boardman Police Department received a report of a trespasser on property at Coyote Springs/Port of Morrow. The man was caught in a high power room, then fled. MCSO received a report of a person driving up and down third street in lone, going very fast. To Boardman ambulance, a report of a women who had fallen at the Dodge City Inn parking lot and was bleeding form the head and was unable to get up. MCSO received a report of a person going to a residence supposedly with information on a homicide two years ago. MCSO received a report of black cows on the highway north of lone. MCSO received a report of a car hitting a steer in the road four miles up Willow Creek. MCSO received a report of cows out on Highway 74 northwest of lone. MCSO received a report of dogs barking for hours in Irrigon. Sept. 18- MCSO received a request for a welfare check on a man who is mentally ill and is living in Irrigon. The man's mother thinks he may have been abused. MCSO received a report of a vehicle parked on property that had windows broken out. MCSO received a report of five bad checks written at Vickie's Video in Imgon. MCSO responded to a report of domestic dispute in progress at the Country Garden Estates. Oregon Police Department received a report of a drive off at BP in Boardman for $50. The drivers were elderly. MCSO received a report of a female shoplifter at Kegler's Sentry Market in Boardman. MCSO responded to a report of custodial interference in Irrigon. MCSO received a report of several items missing from a garage in Imgon, including: computer, printer, and furniture. The garage had been locked up. A rlington am bulance, Arlington Fire Department, Boardman Ambulance, MCSO and the Oregon State Police responded to a rollover at 1-84 west bound 151. A female was hurt with several children. Three were transported to GSH in Hermiston. MCSO received a report of a suspicious pickup in another person's driveway in Imgon. MCSO received a report of loud music at Wagon WheelLloop in Irrigon. Sept. 19- Boardman Police Department received a report of a black Mazda driving erratically and driving another vehicle off the road. MCSO received a report of children out in the road on Miller Road in Boardman. MCSO received a request for a welfare check on a man in Irrigon who was reported to be depressed and didn't show up for work. MCSO received a report of cows out on Highway 730 near Country Garden Estates. MCSO received a report of a car with "Emergency 911" on the rear, speeding through the parking lot at Brown's Auto Truck stop. MCSO received a report of a vehicle partially in a ditch a forth of a mile north of potato sheds on Bombing Range Road. MCSO received a report of a rollover on 1-84 west bound mile post 172. There were no injuries. MCSO received a report of a wrong way driver going west bound in the east bound lane on 1-84 mile post 168. MCSO received a report of a non-injury accident at an intersection at Front and Arcade in Lexington. Anthony Colmenero, 35, was cited for failure to obey a stop sign. Sept. 20- Boardman Police Department received a report of a loud party at Dodge City Motel in Boardman. MCSO received a report of a temporary employee at Cascade Specialties in Boardman who was fired for doing drugs in the bathroom. The man left on foot after throwing rocks and breaking a window. Boardman Police Department received a report of a person who didn't return a carpet cleaner from Sentry Market in Boardman. Oregon State Police received a report of a Ford Probe driven by a man who had shot his wife. The woman was pronounced dead on arrival. OSP located and pursued him. He was caught without incident near Idaho. MCSO received a report of a woman screaming and shouting along Columbia Lane. Sept. 21- Boardman Police Department received a report of a red Dodge Charger parked at Boardman BP all day with the keys in it. Boardman Police Department received a report of a verbal domestic dispute at the Outback Apartments in Boardman. MCSO received a report of a suspicious activity (drugs) in Irrigon. MCSO received a report of suspicious vehicles on California street in Irrigon. Someone had left a garbage sack full of beer cans on the porch of a residence. Heppner Police Department received a report of someone burning in barrels on Chase street and the grass caught on fire with no one attending to it. MCSO received a report o f a woman afraid to return home to stop her boyfriend from throwing her clothes outside at Irrigon Mobile Park. Oregon State Police received a report of a vehicle in the ditch four miles on Highway 74 between Pilot Rock and Heppner. MCSO received a report of a vehicle on 1-84 west bound mile post 142.5 losing control and going into a ditch. Oregon State Police received a report of a car weaving in and out of lone on 1-84 east bound. No weapons were reported. The mother said that her hair was pulled but that it didn't hurt. The man left on foot. MCSO received a report of a semi with the driver possibly drunk on eastbound 1-84 mile post 122. The semi was not found Boardman Police Department received a report of a noisy upstairs neighbor at the Outback Apartments in Boardman. MCSO received a report o f a suspicious person in Imgon. Boy had told a girl he had shot someone in Imgon and that he wasn't sure if anyone had found the body yet. Heppner Police Department received a report of a cat stuck under a kitchen sink at a residence in Heppner. Boardman Police Department received a report of a non-injury motor vehicle accident at Sam- Boardman Elementary in Boardman. lone Site Council holds meeting The first meeting of the lone Site Council (ISC) was held on Sept. 17. Chair Maureen Krebs welcomed new parent represen tatives Arlynda Gates and John Collin. Officers for 1997-98 were elected by consensus. Chairper son is Maureen Krebs; vice-chair, Steve Schaber; secretary, Charity McElligott; and reporter, Jeri McElligott. A code o f conduct was dis cussed for site council. It was agreed there have not been any problems within the group, al though the site council newslet ter recommends that every coun cil have a code of conduct. Helen Marshall will research into what other site councils are doing and report back at the next meeting. Steve Schaber state the Posi tive School Action Committee has not formed yet this year. The council suggested finding a bet ter way to select students of the month. Principal Dick Allen and Schaber will survey students in grades 6-12 to see how they feel about the committee. The coun cil asked Allen to fully explain the committee to students before con ducting the survey. It was noted two staff members who were ad visors to the group are no longer at lone. Betty Reitmann was selected teacher of the year by the Asso ciation of Oregon Industries and will be honored at a banquet in Portland at the Benson Hotel. Jessica Krebs was selected as a student apprentice for the 4-H career exploration program in the food-service industry. She spent 10 days in Washington D.C. as a counselor for the group. Allen will discuss the results of last spring’s assessment tests to the students and send the results to parents. The results showed 86 percent of students in third grade, 64 percent in fifth grade, 50 per cent in eighth grade and 75 per cent in 10th grade met or ex- ceeded standards in reading and literature. In math, m ultiple choice, 50 percent of students in third grade, 55 percent in fifth grade, 50 percent in eighth grade and 38 percent in 10th grade met or exceeded standards. In the open-ended math test, 55 percent of students in fifth grade, no stu dents in eighth grade and 50 per cent of 10th grade met the stan dards. It was noted that 10th grad ers scored “exceedingly high” in math on the SAT test. Reitmann said that because stu dents in grades K, one and two will not be formally tested, the primary teachers in the district are meeting to discuss creating port folio evaluations of students. Allen said that on the week of Sept. 29, students in grades 3-10 will be level tested. In the spring, each student will be retested, with academic growth expected. Re sults will be shared with parents. This year students will also be given state writing tests, state as sessm ent tests and Stanford Achievement Tests in grades four, six and eight. The October in-service for teachers will include the oppor tunity to leam more about the use o f the computer. Teachers in grades 5-12 have the “Grade Ma chine Program” now available. Gary Hunt was appointed new National Honor Society advisor. Allen will discuss the future of the club with him and report back at the next meeting. The yearbook advisor is now an extra-duty contract position. Mark Bird is organizing this group which will meet after school. Allen will report back to the council questions the group had about funding for the year book and why the elementary grades were omitted. It was agreed to continue to subscribe to “The Communique,” an Oregon site council newslet ter. The next meeting of the ISC will be Wednesday, Oct. 8. Rietmann honored by AO I Betty Rietmann, lone Elementary kindergarten/first grade teacher has been chosen as a 1997 Associated Oregon Industries (AOI) Foundation, Oregon Education Excellence Award winner. She is one of 20 teachers in Oregon to receive this recognition. Foundation criteria for this award is based on student a c h ie v e m e n t, s tu d e n t attendance/participation, extra curricular activities, parental communication and involvement and classroom activities. Rietmann attended the awards banquet at the Benson Hotel in Portland on September 18. Master of ceremonies for the evening was Oregon Attorney General Hardy Meyers. Portland Mayor Vera Katz was keynote speaker. One of the goals of the AOI Foundation is to recognize outstanding teachers in the state and to encourage them in the pursuit of excellence in education. Rietmann was particularly recognized for striving to provide the best learning environment for each child in her primary classroom so all will experience success in academic and personal development, said a spokesperson. Each winner receives a specially designed crystal award and a check for $1,000. They also received congratulations from Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber and a letter of congratulations from President Bill Clinton. Industries is the local area which support the Foundation are Pendleton Grain Growers and Columbia Bus Company. Meg Murray of Murray Drug nominated Rietmann for the award. Others from the lone area attending the awards banquet as special guests were lone School Principal Dick Allen, Morrow County School Superintendent Chuck Starr, Deena Starr and John and Kerry Rietmann. Cub Scouts plan school scouting night The Heppner Cub Scout Troop #661 will hold their annual "School Night for Scouting" this Thursday, September 25, at 7 p.m. in the Heppner Elementary School cafeteria. The meeting provides orientation material for any boys interested in joining Cub Scouts. Cub Scouting is open to all boys in first through fifth grade. "If your son is interested in becoming a Cub Scout, this meeting is the perfect opportunity for you to attend to leam more about the scouting program and meet with the current Cub Scouts and their families," said a Scout spokesperson. A representative from the Oregon Trail Boy Scout Council will conduct the orientation. The local troop is also in need of adult leaders for various positions. This meeting will also provide information for anyone interested in becoming a Cub Scout leader. "This orientation will be more than your average run-of-the-mill meeting," said the spokesperson.
