EIGHT - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, September 17,1997 Local couple bring art to area teens By Nova Rietmann Mark and Astnd Bruno came to lone one year ago and began having art classes in their home for teenagers in the area. Since then they have received money from the Morrow County Arts Council so they can continue operating the classes. And now their house has been properly named "Heart Works House." They have classes for teens on Thursday evenings from 7-10 p.m. at their house at 220 C Street. The classes are free of charge for teens. For infor mation call them at 422-7305. Astrid was bom and raised in Sweden. She always enjoyed art but in her late teens her interest increased. Astrid attended two art classes in Sweden: The Fundamentals, where she went to paint in places including Italy and Spain, and Experimental Textile Work. Then at 18 she came to America. Mark came from a small town in California called Martinez. He lived in Santa Barbara for two years and began taking classes: Live Figure Clay modeling, and a stone carving class where Mark and Astrid met. In Santa Barbara, Mark was involved in the art community and started a gallery. Mark vacationed in lone and fell in love with the scenery, landscape, and the small town atmosphere. Astrid has loved lone from the first day that she came. They say that the people of lone and Morrow County responded to them with open arms. Mark and Astrid feel that they are filling a void and bringing art back to Morrow County. Their classes let people explore and find the medium they want to work with. Mark works with stone, copper and recycled materials to create his Astrid and Mark Bruno art. Astrid has several mediums she works with: embroidery, textiles, water colors, oil paint, stone, assembled art and sculpting. Mark has other projects in lone such as being a volunteer fire fighter. He also works with the Morrow County Arts Council and helped design and build the stage in lone's city park. Astrid is working on showing and promoting her art. In the near future Mark and Astrid want to expand their art classes. They also want to have guest artists come in and teach work shops. "I encourage everybody to explore their artistic side and keep culture and art alive in Morrow County because it's needed," says Mark. "Art can't hurt you." Astrid says, "Art is as Artists Astrid Bruno (standing left) and Mark Bruno (seated second from right) assist art students during necessary as air, math, or PE to classes held in lone. develop into a mature well being person.
