The 17-year old princess will spend her summer at the Vey Ranch, owned by grandmother Marilyn Schiller, working sheep, following a family tradition. "When I was a kid, it was a big thrill to come out here and spend a week in the summer," says Maci. The ranch on Buttercreek was settled in 1861 by Maci's grandfather's uncle, Antone Vey, Sr., who came from Portugal. The family first ran sheep, then cattle and now the current generation has both. Last year the family had sheep dog trials at the ranch in memory of her grandfather, Bob Schiller, who has passed away. "I came out and helped put on the dinner," said Maci. "It took a lot of work running the sheep, so the whole family had to jump in." Maci has something of her grandfather's that she cherishes— his horse and saddle. Maci rides his horse, Chuck's Fritz, (nicknamed 'Baby') as her official court mount. She says that the 12-year-old bay quarterhorse's personality "differs from day to day." "Sometimes, he's most mellow," says Maci. "But he wants to jog through parades and he watches little kids really carefully. He spooks if he's tied up and you have to talk if you come up behind him. He's just jumpy, but you couldn't ask for a better horse." Baby spent five or six years as a roping horse. Maci sports a new set of Garcia spurs this summer, which she paid for herself by raising rams. Like many of the fair and rodeo royalty over the years, Maci's family has been well represented on Morrow County Fair and Rodeo courts. Her mother's sister, Bonnie Grant, was a princess on the 1976 court, her father's sister, Laurie Barrow, was a 1978 princess and her aunt, Verenia French Schiller was the 1967 Morrow County Fair and Rodeo queen. Long involved in rodeo, the family has an old poster and a photograph of a rodeo held at the Vey Ranch in the early days. | $ / 75th AWARDS: PRCA All-Around Champion Saddle Maci says that she has really enjoyed her experience on the rodeo court. "Everything has been a lot of fun," says Maci. "I like traveling and when you go to other towns, it's amazing how nice the people are." "But," she adds, "Morrow County is just the greatest place. I've really enjoyed being an ambassador for Morrow County. Without all of the support from our families and the people and businesses of Morrow County, everything we do wouldn't be possible. Being on the court gives you a chance to know the people in the county and it other areas around us." She adds that she had a great time representing Morrow County at Chief Joseph Days in Joseph near Wallowa Lake. "There were so many people there-we went to dances and swimming in the lake." She also liked the horse races at Prineville. During the school year, Maci is at home in Ione where she will be a senior this fall. Maci's dad, Harvey is a mechanic and a wheat farmer and also volunteers as an EMT. He volunteers time in the ambulance at the Morrow County Rodeo every year and was voted EMT of the year. Maci's mom, Bobbi, who has spent a lot of time chauffeuring her daughter to court functions this summer, is employed during the school year as the library technician at Ione High School. Maci also has a brother Kacy, 15. Her paternal grandparents, Marilyn and Cleo Childers, also live in Ione. Besides riding and working on the ranch, the dark-eyed, dark haired beauty enjoys knee boarding and tubing. At Ione High School, she is a member of the honor society, the Letter Club, was junior class secretary and was a member of the tennis, basketball and volleyball teams her freshman and sophomore years. She is active in 4-H horse, swine and cooking clubs and has been in 4-H sewing and food preservation. Last summer she was a pennant bearer. Her Princess Maci Childers Eyes: Brown Hair: Brown .
