J 31 3 ] ^ Z § Celebration this weekend Heppner Garden Club plans to meet Monday, July 7, at 6:30 p.m. in Hager Park. The program will be "Weed Identification for Fun and Profit", presented by Kathryn Kettel, Extension agent and Master Gardener. All gardeners are welcome to attend. Members and guests are invited to bring samples o f their garden weeds. All members and their guests are also asked to bring a box lunch and a chair. "If weather denies this pleasant outdoor summer meeting, we will move to the St. Pat's Senior Center," according to a club spokesman. Extension office has new hours The Morrow County Extension office has announced new hours. The office will now be open from 8 a.m. to noon and 12:30- to 4:30 p.m. Staff reductions due to Ballot Measures 47 and 50 have forced the Extension staff to revise current staffing patterns, according to an Extension news release. "The new office hours may actually benefit working parents who have found it difficult to come into the office in the past. They will now be able to conduct Extension business during their lunch hour," said the release. The Extension office will still have an answering machine to take messages from after-hours calls and the 800-number for out of area calls. The Extension office and staff will move to their new location in the Gilliam Bisbee building this summer, as soon as the county completes building renovations. The big lone Fourth of July "Red, White and Blues” Celebration will get underway this weekend, with food and events galore, starting Thursday, July 3, and continuing on until Saturday morning, July 5. On Thursday the celebration starts off with a bang, with volleyball, basketball and golf tournaments all beginning at 10 a.m. A street dance will be held Thursday evening and concessions will be sold all day. Friday's activities begin with the Dawn's Early Light Walk/Run at 8:30 a.m. Sidewalk chalk drawing will start at 9:30 a.m. and the parade will be held beginning at 11 a.m. The Cruzin' Blues Car Show also begins at 11 a.m. and the horseshoe tournament at 11:30 a.m. At noon ICABO plans a hamburger feed, meanwhile, the games, the beer garden, white elephant sale, arts and crafts display at the Legion Hall, Garden Club dedication, frog jumping and other activities get underway. f-'-.; . - • The 1997 4-H Home Economics/Expressive Arts Pre- Fair will be held Tuesday, July 8, at the Morrow County Fairgrounds in Heppner, from 8:45 a.m. to noon. Experienced 4-H members will put the program on this year. They have chosen topics that they felt were important to address and will share their 'expertise' with other members, said an Extension news release. Home Economics Pre-Fair is a free non-competitive event where all ages can learn to: understand the fair premium book and fair registration forms; tips for foods contests and exhibits; 4-H scrapbook ideas; how to be comfortable during interview judging; merchandising and coordinating; practice moving confidently across the stage during modeling contests and more. All area 4-H members are welcome to attend the event. Pre-registration is not necessary. Registration begins at 8:45 a.m. For more information, contact Bill Broderick, 676-9642 or 1- 800-342-3664. Babysitting and entertainment will be offered at the lone United Church of Christ Education Building from 1-5 p.m. At 1:30 p.m., Blues bands begin playing in the park, with openers, Li'l Lynn and the Smokin' Soles. At 2 p.m., the Roy Lindstrom barbecue begins and the lone Swimming Pool opens for free swimming until 5 p.m. At 3:30 p.m. will be the Ken Snyder Auction ar.d at 4 p.m. the bed races will be held. The Paul deLay Band will be featured at 5 p.m. The Historical Society tour of area homes, the Bombing Range and Wells Springs will also start at 5 p.m. Bingo will be held at the Legion Hall beginning at 7:30 p.m. and another band. Jimmy Lloyd Rea and the Switchmasters will play at 8 p.m. The evening of the Fourth will culminate with fireworks, set off at the Stefani ranch. Saturday morning a breakfast buffet wili be held at the Office Tavern and Beecher's Restaurant.
