Soroptimist International of Heppner made a special presentation to senior Traci Dickenson who won the Soroptimist district Youth Citizenship Award for her "high degree of volunteensm. This was the first time the district contest had been won locally. Dickenson won a $500 scholarship. She had earlier won the local contest and scholarship. The Soroptimist International also presented the 1997 Woman of the Year award to Claudia Hughes for "going far beyond her job" as an "outstanding member of the community”. Students participate in R&W reading program 1 The R & W Reading Program, jointly supported by the R & W Drive-In of Heppner and Heppner Elementary School, has completed another successful year of encouraging students to read. The owners and operators of the dnve-In, Alex and Patty Rystedt and Scott and Carol Hollis, join with parents and teachers in believing that students must develop the habit of reading early in life and need to read often to develop the skills that allow reading to be an enjoyable recreational activity. In the past school year, 122 different students reached their reading goals and earned a total of 237 certificates for treats at the drive-ln. The top readers in each grade were: kindergarten- Seth Morgan (two certificates); first grade-Kelsie Fox, Kate Kendrick and Megan Orr (four certificates each); second grade- Gina McKinney (three); third grade-Krystal Naims (seven); fourth grade-Shanna Rietmann (seven); fifth grade-Justin Botefuhr, Stefanie Hanson, Brooke Rust (each four); and sixth grade-Tracy Baker (seven). Teachers participating in the program by establishing individual goals and working with parents to monitor progress were: Karen Clough, Cherry Webber, Lea Calvert, Joy Krein, Sherry Matteson, Cara Osmin, Karen Dubuque, Mary Haguewood, Pat Hentges, Jannie Allen, Bill Ewing, Dave Gunderson, and Linda Shaw. Guest speaker was 1986 Heppner High School alumnus Kim Wright, who spoke on her career in clothing design and graphic design. Wright credited her experience in 4-H with giving her a basis for her career. She told the girls to stay determined, saying, "Don't let weeds grow around your dreams." Entertainment was provided by a quartet which included Joe Lindsay, Tom Phelan, Leif Egertson and John Thurlow. They sang "Runaround Sue", "California Dreamm'" and " Blue scramble MOTHER S DAY WEEK MAY 5-11,1997 The Willow Creek Country Club held a barbecue and a golf scramble on April 27.
