By Msrtyn .ijn.ifi I.M Lacking the judgment of a ground squirrel, a few sunny January days and warmer weather prompted me to bum weeds and pick up scattered junk. But the garbage I’d really like to dump is the past year’s accumu lation of paperwork relevant to tax calculations. No doubt the reason it turned colder was to direct me back to pencil work. With tax preparations in mind, I wrongfully labeled Post Office patrons as probable tax payers, inferring that the Postal Service is tax supported. Sorry, Mike. The Post Office is a sub-agency of the government subject to government regulations, but it is not tax supported. Therefore we need to write more letters or send more greeting cards. Yet even some billing agencies seem to have forgotten how to write or at least how to make statements legible. We certainly can’t knock the postal system efficiency. (So please don’t bum my letters.) It’s just that with our escalating national debt, I see red when reading about wastefulness or overspending of any agency. But hey, what’s a few extra million dollars if we must subsidize the work to save face? Take the upcoming inauguration-a somewhat spendy affair. Al though no more effective than the first swearing in of a president in 1789, there’s no comparison in cost or ceremony. Either there was a shortage of wood, except for George’s false teeth, or no one deemed that an inauguration platform was necessary back then. President Washington took the oath of office with his hand on the Bible after they took away his hatchet. And they rustled up enough black powder to stage a fireworks in celebration. But then George and Martha never jet-setted around the globe as world leaders. He even had to paddle his way across the Potomac River. And the upkeep of his white horse was cheap compared to jet fuel. Barring a blizzard, should the current cold snap in Washington D.C. exist on Jan. 20, all the planned outdoor pageantry can still be held. There’s enough hot air being bantered about by politicians there to keep thousands of spectators warm. And the bands will play on if their instruments don’t freeze up. had not been returned to his custo dial parent in Irrigon; Morrow County Sheriffs office received a report of a suspicious vehicle; Morrow County Sheriffs office received a report of a fire alarm at O regon W aste M anagem ent.
