SIX- Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 11, 1996 Fillies canter to win over Lady Cardinals to Molly Rhea S R ÎK iV Tuesday, December 3, marked the season opener for both the Heppner Fillies and lone Cardinals. After a tight first half the hosting Fillies broke loose and cantered to a 56-43 win over the Lady Cards. With a meager 20-16 halftime lead, the Fillies went on a stampede in the second half, scoring 18 points in both the third and fourth quarters. Late in the game lone mounted a successful press which resulted in 19 fourth quarter points, several coming off of forced turn overs. Although the Lady Cards outscored tne Fillies in the final period, they were unable to overcome the lead the Fillies had built in the first three quarters. “The. girls put out great effort,” Coach John Boyer said. Lori Moeller led the Fillies with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sne was followed by Lexi Matteson with 11 points. Heppner displayed a running attack with 11 players contributing to the final score. lone showed six players scoring with Dawn Boor and Suzy Heideman leading the Cardinals with 13 points apiece. Casey Ingraham scored 11 points, with Amy Papineau and Kathleen Greenup adding seven and six . points, respectively, in the JV Fillies' loss to the Lady Cardinals. The young Heppner squad looked a little tight with points coming from only five of their 14 players. lone’s Cammie Burright scored 12 points to lead the JV Cards to a 43-27 win. hy M fillv Rhea The Heppner Fillies lost the first game in the Grant Union T ou rn am en t by a heartbreaking two points in overtime to a Pine Eagle, 44- 46. “Our girls showed up ready to play," said Coach John Boyer. “Friday’s game was wild and physical; the girls played hara.” The four-team tournament started Friday afternoon, Dec. 6, with the Fillies pitted against the tall, physical team of Pine Eagle High. The game was close throughout with Heppner leading by two points after the first quarter, and only one at the half. At the close of the third quarter the Fillies were again up by two. At the end of regulation play the score was tied at 39. In the three minute overtime the Fillies were only able to score five while the Spartan’s managed seven points to tough out the win. Heppner managed to build the lead to 15 at the half and maintained that margin throughout the second halt to ice the win. Coach Boyer stated, “I’m pleased with the weekend’s effort. On Saturday the girls played strong and made good decisions.” The Fillies' leading scorers for the two- game tournament were Annie Hisler with 23 points and Lori Moeller with 19. The first quarter score favor ed the Rockets, 10-9. At the half, the Cards led 28-22. The third quarter score was 42-40 in favor of the Cardinals. Saturday, Dec. 7, the Car dinals defeated Baptist Chris tian, 77-57. The Cards had 40 points on the scoreboard at the half and followed it up with 37 points in the last two quarters. Top scorers for the Cardinals were Jake McElligott with 16 points and Steve Allen and Jory Crowell with 12 each. Marc Orem had 13 points, Kelly Morgan, eight, Randy Scott, six, Patrick Eberhard and Joe Bacon each had four, and Jacob Taylor checked in with two. Mustangs defeat Cards, 86-58 By Jennifer Thompson The time for the Heppner High School Boys C-team basketball same, originally scheduled for 6 p.m. this Thursday, Dec. 12, has been changed to 3:30 p.m. Thursday. The HHS C-team will play Spray at home. ________________________ Mustangs, Rockets IMS girls beat Arlington, 21-11 Heppner C-team game time changed \ JV Cards lose to to Grant Union The lone Middle School girls started their basketball season off by defeating the Arlington Goslings, 21-11. The top scorer for the Lady Cardinals was eighth grader Allison Halvorsen with six points, followed by Charissa Gates, Nonnee Walters and Shelby Krebs, each with four, Jennifer Thompson, two and Jeanette Brantley, one. & ^ lone Cardinals win one, lose one Mustangs lose The Heppner Mustangs mix ed it up with the 3A Grant Union Prospectors and came up on the short end of a 77-66 score in the tournament cham pionship game. The game was played in streaks as the Prospectors jumped to a 16-8 first quarter lead. Heppner clawed back within three points, but Grant Union went on a 15-0 run to lead 39-21 at the half. Heppner didn't have an answer for 6'4" senior Bo Workman, who scored 10 of his game-high 18 points in the second quarter. Heppner rallied back to with in eight points inside two minutes remaining in the game, but the Prospectors seal ed the victory, making 9 for 14 free throws in the fourth quarter. Jeff Watkins led Heppner with 13 points, Justin Matteson added 12 and Eric Schonbach- ler scored 10. Jim Schlaich led the team on the boards with 10 caroms. The Mustangs didn't help themselves, as they shot only 16 for 35 at the free throw line, while the Prospectors were 17 for 23. Heppner plays three games the week of Dec 9. They host ed Condon, Tuesday, Dec. 10, and will hit the road on the weekend, traveling to lone Fri day night, Dec. 13, and River side Saturday, Dec. 14. After taking a six point lead through one quarter, Hepner raced to a 44-29 Jialf- time lead in the Mustang home opener. The game was typical of ear ly season contests, as the teams combined for 45 fouls. The Mustangs had balanced scor- ing, with four players in dou ble figures. Heppner was led by Eric Schonbachler with 15 points, Chris Anthony with 12, Justin Matteson, 11, and Tim Dickenson, 10. The Cardinals' leading scorers were Jake McElligott with 20, and Marc Orem, 10. lone played without senior starters Jon Garrett and Luke Swanson; both were out with injuries. Police Chief issues warning Heppner Police Chief Doug Rathbun has issued a warning concerning third-party calls. "If you get any calls from an operator wanting you to accept the charges for a third-party call or conference call, be sure you know the party that is calling, " said Chief Rathbun. The lone Cardinals JV team kicked off its season on Tues day, Dec. 3, against the Hepp ner Mustangs. The Cards lost to the Mustangs, 60-39. Car dinal freshman, Allen Grib- skov, lead the scoring with 12 points, followed by Randy Scott with six. Nathan Riet mann, Mark McElligott and Pete Cantu followed up with five points each. Foreign ex change student Patrick Eber hard pulled out with four points and freshman Dylan Pettyjohn came out with two. At halftime, the Cardinals were behind by 17 points and they stayed behind for the re mainder of the game. The lone JV team played their second game in Pilot Rock against the Rockets. They lost by only two points, with a final score of 44-42. Leading scorers were Allen Gribskov with 15 and Randy Scott, 13. The game was close all the way, but at the half, the Rockets were leading by four. The score was tied at 29 in the third quarter, but the Cardinals again fell behind and lost by two. The Cards played the Hepp ner "C " team on Saturday, Dec. 7, and won by a score of 65-25. Nathan Rietmann lead the scoring with 13 points, followed by Mark McElligott with 12. The Cardinals lead the entire game and were leading by 20 at the half. Filly JVs trounce RHS hy Molly Rhea---------------------------- Heppner’s JV girls looked like a different team as they trounced Riverside’s JV ’s on Thursday, December 5. The young Fillies jumped to a 13-2 uarter and lead after one qiu never looked back, winning 47-23. Casey Ingraham contributed 17 7 points and eight rebounds in tne effort. To enhance the win, eight o f the 14 JV pla^e ers scored for the Fillies.
