SIX- Special Edition Morrow County Fair & Rodeo Heppner Gazette-Times, Wednesday, August 7, 1996 What is 4-H? 4-H i about friends, fun and learning about nature, cookmg, growing plants, photography, animal care or working togeth- er to help others. Who can belong to 4-H? Any- one kindergarten through 12th grade. You 'U find 4-H through- out your county, tate, country, the \,,orld . In Morrow County, there are over 200 member Look what you can do in 4-H- members are enrolled in animal ience, natural science, home economjc and expressive art project area . What do you do in 4-H? It depends on you. Everybody may be a friend in the same grade or school, or include peo- ple from other commuruties. Oubs decide how often to meet and elect officers to conduct club business. Your club may decide to be active in the com- munjty, raise money for chari- ty, become involved in recycl- ing projects or build nature trails. You can go on field trip or to 4-H camp. The choices grow a you get older. Doe 4-H co ta lot? There are no tate or national dues or re- quired uniform . You pay $3.50 per year for printed materials and information, and for pro- ject materials. A horse can be e pen ive, but not a beginning home economic project. Your 4-H club may decide to collect due to fund pecial activities. H ow do you join 4-H? It' ea y. Choo e the project you like. A k ome friend or brothers and ister to join you . A k parents, grandparents, adult friends or neighborhood adult to be your leader. Sev- eral adult can share thi responsibility. You need only two members, but you can have as many as you like. Determine the projects mem- ber want and visit the Morrow County Extension office or call an agent for help. There are numerous active clubs that welcome new members. 4-H is "learning today, lead- ing tomorrow and learning by doing" -learning how to set goals and work toward those goals; lec1m responsibility for an animal, or finishing projects, choosing how much to learn and deciding how involved in 4-H to be; leadership, decision- making, cooperation and how to present yow-self and ideas to others. F'im Street Shelly Rietmann at the 1995 junior snack contest Contest open to senior citizens Senior citizens are once again invited to enter the "Memoirs of the Past" contest at the Mor- row G:ounty Fair. The contest is sponsored by the Morrow County Historical Society. Seniors may have one entry in each of three categories, " Most Historical", " Most Humorous" and " Most Adventurous''. Entries must be turned in to the Morrow Coun- ty Historical Society, c/o Bar- bara Bloodsworth, P.O . Box 338, Heppner, OR 97836, by Friday, August 9. A $50 cash prize will be given in each of the categories. Win- ners will be announced at fajr. Entrants must be Morrow County residents, 65 years or older and must have an authentic story of pioneer life. If taped on a cassette, the story must be no longer than 15 minutes.
