Not much left of Kilkenny home said they had no choice. The fire apparently started in an oil furnace, and no one was home at the time of the blaze. There was insurance on the home. "W e had just two weeks before it would have been finished and ready to move in to ," John Killkenny said Tues day. "W e had not petitioned to get in (to the fire district) but we had told them we wanted to. It was all verbal. The fire depart ment knew we wanted to get in ." Kilkenny said the house is located one half mile outside Controversy and debate has arisen locally following Friday’s fire at the John and Diane Kilkenny hom e. H eppner firefighters refused to respond to the 911 call requesting help, when it was determined that the Kilkenny property was out side the rural fire protection district boundry. The Kilkenny's are naturally upset over the loss of their newly restored farmhouse, built by the late federal Judge John Kilkenny in 1914, but because of liability problems and responsibility to members of the fire district, fire officials the fire district, and that the house burned for one half hour before "it really got going." He said once the fire got going it took about an hour to bum completely to the ground. Neighbors tried to help but garden hoses weren't enough. "W e needed a pumper. One pumper would have done the jo b ," Kilkenny said. Kilkenny said he would like to see the rural fire protection policy changed. "S o something like this doesn't happen again. Apparently firefighters are allowed to go outside the district only for mutual aid and when someone's life is at risk. In survey, four-day school week favored school. Teachers, who have a con tract with the district, work as many hours, but do not have as many student contact days. School district officials say they have tried to limit teacher workshops and meetings to Fridays. Ninety percent of students responding to the survey recommended that the four- day student week continue, as did 61 percent of the parents, 78 percent of the teachers and 82 percent of the classified employees. Only 15 percent of the parents, three percent of the teachers and two percent of the classified employees recom mended the five-day student week if cuts were required Morrow County teachers, students, parents and school district classified employees are in favor of the four-day school week, according to a survey conducted by the Morrow County School District. The four-day week was implement ed as a way to save money in a district hard hit by budget cuts and state-wide school fun ding equalization. Savings were made in utilities, busing, a reduction in classified staff hours and substitute costs. However 22 percent of parents, nine percent of teachers, four percent of classified staff and three per cent of students recommended going back to the five-day week, with no stipulation of cuts elsewhere. Sixty-two percent of the teachers say that they believe student learning has been as successful in the four-day stu dent week as it would be in a five-day week and 74 percent say that they have been affect ed positively by the four-day student week. Fifty-one percent of the parents say their children are learning as much as they did on a five-day schedule. Only 10 percent say the four-day week has been a problem for their families. Good photographs will be the topic of the training which will be of fered at 10 a.m. in the State Of fice Building, 950 Columbia Drive (adjacent to the Blue Mountain Community College Hermiston campus) in Hermis- ton. Training will provide infor mation for participants to share with their respective study groups. Basic principles of com positions for memorable photo graphs and selection of albums and display materials to pro long the life of treasured photo graphs will be covered. Ex amples of ways to display and use photos to increase a child's self-confidence and belonging ness to the family will be shared. There is no charge for train ing. Participants will receive materials for re-teaching the lesson to their groups.
