■ t i % Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 7, 1996 THREE Mustangs down league-leading Umatilla Vikings Heppner Fillies come close, but lose to Vikings The Heppner Mustangs con tinued their winning ways last week, taking a 65-59 victory from league-leading Umatilla on the Vikings own floor Satur day night. The Mustangs relied on a tough defense, strong inside play and a good overall scoring effort to come away with the win. Ben Hubert led the Mustang scoring attack, banging down 16 points, followed closely by point guard Justin Matteson with 15. Chris Sykes chipped in 12, Jim Schlaich 11, Dan Burn side seven, and Adam Doher ty and David Michael two each. As they have the last several games, the Mustangs built a comfortable lead in the first half only to see it chipped away in the second. The Mustangs outscored Umatilla 33-19 in the first half, but the Vikings rang up eight more points than Heppner in the second stanza. The win upped Heppner's league record to 4 and 3 and dropped Umatilla to 6 and 2. The Mustangs were scheduled to play Sherman County Tues day night, but the game, which was a weather postponed make-up game, was postpon ed once again for bad weather at Moro. The Mustangs' next game will be a home contest this Fri day against Weston-McEwen. The Heppner Fillies played at Umatilla on Saturday, Feb. 3 and came within a couple points of beating the Vikings. The Fillies lost, 43-39. The Fillies had a very slug gish first half, scoring only 10 points and trailed by 14 at the half. Not having a game for over a week had taken its toll on their aggressive style and timing. However, the Fillies came alive in the second half and played much better ball. At one point in the fourth quarter, the Fillies lead the Vikings, 38-36. A couple of key turnovers and fouls near the end of the game gave Umatilla the advantage they needed to end up with the win, 43-39. Annie Hisler and Lori Moel ler each made eight points; Tina Kemp and Mindy Binsch- us had six, Jill Barber added five points and Lexi Matteson and Jossie Evans each had two points. Toni Kemp and Stormy Howard rounded out the scor ing with one foul shot each. “ We made a great run in the second half to put us in posi tion to win the game," said coach John Boyer. “It was a Heppner players Jill Barber (42) and Mindy Binschus (12) game of momentum swings guard Viking ball handler. and we ended up on the short end.” The Fillies will host the Weston-McEwen TigerScots at home on Friday, Feb. 9.
