Printer David Sykes, Publisher HES chosen for NAEP math test Thirty fourth graders from Heppner Elementary School (HES) were to participate in the National Assessment of Educa tional Progress (NAEP) math test Tuesday, Jan. 30. NAEP is authorized by Congress to assess and report on what American students know and can do in key academic sub jects. About 250 schools in Oregon were chosen at random to par ticipate. From a list of enrolled students, thirty were selected by state organizers. HES may be randomly selected for monitoring by an NAEP repre sentative to check compliance with test procedures. Linda Shaw, reading specialist and test coordinator, has been train ed by the NAEP and adminis tered the test. A.C. Houghton Elementary School's fourth grade (in Boardman) was also selected for participation in this study. Horse Shoeing Experienced & Very Professional Matt Bunn 989-8513 The assessment includes both multiple-choice and open- ended questions. Strands to be assessed are number sense, properties and operations; measurement; geometry and spatial sense; data analysis, statistics and probability; and algebra and functions. The ultimate goal is to assess the ability of American stu dents to think about a math problem, make connections to their knowledge base and com municate about the chosen strategy, said Shaw.
