To celebrate this oc casion, the South Morrow County Scholarship Trust (SMCST), a local chapter of Dollars For Scholars, is having a fund drive during the month of February. Cans have been placed in stores and businesses in lone, Lexington and Heppner. The SMCST is asking for a dollar contribution per resident for their scholarship program for local high school students. Dollars For Scholars is a grassroots non-profit organiza tion providing financial assist ance and community support for students seeking post secondary educational oppor tunities. All the money raised in this drive will go to area students, said Reverend Stan Hoobing, president of SMCST. The cash for cans event marks a special occasion for the Dollars for Scholars and is part of the national celebration. "1 9 % Year of the Scholar... Hope for Every Student". Across the country, over 750 Dollars for Scholars chapters are joining the celebration to raise funds and awareness for their students. The SMCST is a community- based, volunteer-directed chapter. In 1993, Dollars for Scholars chapters in 40 states distributed nearly $7.1 million to 14,200 students in their com munities. Since the program's creation in 1958, Dollars For Scholars has awarded over $61 million to 130,000 students.
