Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, November 29, 1995 -i Lutherans donate to Neighborhood Center Hope, Valby churches plan services n -( V The congregations of Hope and Valby Lutheran churches are getting ready for the Christ mas season with special ser vices and events this last week of November. The first of four special mid week advent services on the theme of “ It's a Quantum Leap to Christmas" will be held Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m . at Valby Lutheran Church, lone. This week's theme is "Preparation Without a Deadline", based on the reading of Mark 13:32-37. The Neighborhood Center of South Morrow County recent ly received contributions of » $220 from the Lutheran i Brotherhood and $150 from the e Aid Association for Lutherans. Janice Skaggs, Neighborhood Center director, said that the funds were a big help in pur chasing food for Thanksgiving Day food baskets. The "Care and Share" pro gram of Lutheran Brotherhood provides funds to help needy families in areas served by Lu theran congregations. "The organization's mission is to serve Lutherans, their con gregations, institutions and G e n u i n e C com m unities," said Linda Shaw, Lutheran Brotherhood Fraternal communicator for Hope Lutheran Church. Local ly the organization, through Blue Mountain Branch number 8716, has also provided scholar ships for higher education and matching funds for projects of Hope Lutheran. The Aid Association for Lutherans is an insurance organization that provides in surance for Lutheran member ship and has a benevolent divi sion that provides funding for the needy and community activities. She added that 2,497 pounds of food, which was more than the pre vious year, were collected earlier by the athletes at Hepp ner and lone High schools and other volunteers. On the first three Saturdays of December and January, the club will take day trip outings in the neighboring mountains according to weather and snow conditions. Participating skiiers will meet at the Heppner City Park at 9 a.m. to pool rides and get or ganized for the day as to route, lunch break and time schedule. These outings will be very in formal, with anyone having an interest and appropriate cross country ski equipment wel come to participate. Service will be held at Condon United Church of Christ at 2 p.m. Pastor Stan Hoobing's message is entitled, "New Year Resolutions", bas ed on a reading of Matthew 24:37-44. A coffee hour will follow the services. Everyone is welcome to attend. Tuesday, Nov. 28 Soft White checked the conditions ahead of time, will be designated for each day trip. The first day trip outing will be Saturday, Dec. 2, if there is snow. In January and February, the club and the Blue Mountain Community College (BMCC) will sponsor cross-country ski classes for the general public. The orientation class will be held at the Heppner High School library at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16. On-the-snow classes will be held on the four Saturdays of February. Further details on these classes will be published in the BMCC winter bulletin and in this paper.
