October 4, 1995 - RVE Linsey Ropp bags big one Women's groups form at All Saint's A ll Saint's Episcopal Church announces the formation of tw o small groups for women. Tw elve women are already committed to attending this six week course formed to facilitate study, support and prayer directed towards w om en's spirituality. The groups will use the "Serendipity H ouse" small group materials developed by Lyman Col men and others. This is a basic study meant for beginners who desire to enrich their lives, said the R everen d A1 M iller. G ail Hughes is directing and leading these sm all grou p s. Man killed in accident at Blake's Linsey Ropp of Lexington has just had a "on ce in a lifetim e" experience. The 15 year old Heppner High School sophomore was lucky enough to draw a tag for a big horn sheep and bagged a big one at the Hart Mountain Antelope Refuge on Sept. 11. Linsey shot the sheep on the sixth day of her hunt about 35 miles from Lakeview in Lake County, around 125 miles southwest of Bums. The sheep, shot at around 200 yards, field dressed at 175 pounds and had an "e x c e lle n t" Boone and Crockett score of 167-2/8 in ches. Boone and Crockett is a measurement o f the the big sheep's horns. Linsey and her dad, Vilas, camped out during the hunt and back packed for about four days into the refuge. Vilas got a big horn sheep three years ago in the same hunt. Tw o other Heppner area people had tags this year, Con nie Holmquist, who was also successful, and Herman W in ter, who will depart on his hunt shortly. Vilas says that they plan to have the sheep mounted, but also enjoy its meat. Mom Deb bie says that it tastes better than lamb, more like elk meat. Richard Shockman, H er miston, was killed Sept. 20 in an accident at Blake's Ranch. According to M orrow Coun ty District Attorney Earl R. Woods said that life saving efforts at the scene were unsuc cessful because the injuries to Shockman were too severe. Anyone interested is w el come to attend. A special in vitation is given to men who have been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and their wives. Prostate cancer sur vivors and their w ives are also encouraged to come and be part of die support team. The purpose o f this support group is to provide helpful in formation and encouragement through sharing of personal ex periences and other ways as the program develops. For more information call 676-9449. Creative Hands awards presented The 1995 M orrow County Fair Creative Hands awards have been awarded to Ida Farra and Sandra VanLiew, both of Heppner. Farra won in the 40 years and over category and VanLiew won in the 39 years and under category. Esther Minnich, Board man, was also honored for her many contributions to the fair with her numerous prize winnning entries over the years. The Creative Hands awards are given to outstanding ex hibitors in the open class home economics divisions based on points earned. A Mue ribbon earns three paints, a red ribbon tw o points and a white ribbon one point. " I t is those who exhibit in several clases and receive win ning ribbon points who help in upgrading the quality of our M orrow County Fair," said a fair spokesperson. "T h is is the reason the Mor row County Family and Com munity Council sponsors these awards which are given in ap preciation to the winners for their contribution to the fa ir." The lone class of 1963 w ill host a reunion for the classes of 1950 to 1970 on Oct. 14 and 15. The reunion w ill be held at the Monarch Motel near Clackamas Town Center in the Portland metro area. Information has been mailed to those on the list, but reunion organizers would like to invite anyone interested in attending, including parents, teachers and friends of class members. The preferred options selected from this faaabflity study was a four- lane, 25-yard outdoor swimm ing pool with a zero-depth fan (like a beach without the sand) and a deep plunge pool and slide. In addition , this option would have a 20 x 20 indoor pool tank and a multi-purpose room included in the dressing room building. The initial idea is for this indoor facility to be used for swimming instruction and exercise or therapy on a part-time basis and to extend the use of the facility for these uses one or tw o months on either end o f the swimming season. A t this time, it is not in tended to be for recreational use and not to be open for the entire winter season. The estimated cost for the fa c ility as p rop osed was $1,224,500. The park district board agreed that a tax burden in excess o f $975,000 was too much to ask the district tax payers to bear. Arts and Crafts group plans sale An arts and crafts sale wiD be held Saturday, N ov. 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at a place to be announced at a later date. The sale is sponsored by the M or row County Creative Arts and Crafts dub. The sale w ill also feature white elephants and refresh ments.
