Mustangs start league play with win
The Heppner M ustangs
opened the CBC league season
with a 22-12 win over the
visiting Umatilla Vikings Fri
day, Sept. 22 in Heppner.
The game was a close, well-
played game with only one tur
nover between the two squads.
The Mustangs used a monster
drive in the fourth quarter to
finally put the game away after
Umatilla missed a field goal and
a fake field goal attempt to try
to take the lead.
After surviving the fake field
goal attempt, the Mustangs
took over on their own six yard
line with 11:01 remaining in the
fourth quarter. Heppner start
ed the drive with an offside
penalty, moving them back to
the three yard line. The
Mustangs then marched 97
yards on 18 plays to score the
game clincher with only 2:02
left on the clock. Senior
halfback Shaun Hisler carried
the ball 10 times on the drive
and scored from two yards out
to make the score 20-12. Hisler
gained 106 yards on 27 carries,
his third 100 yard effort in four
weeks. Quarterback Brian Kof-
fler found tight end Damien
Wilhelm in the end zone for the
pat to make the final score
22-12. Wilhelm also caught a 36
yard third down pass from Kof-
fler for the big play of the drive.
Heppner scored first on this
warm autumn evening with
halfback Rod Zumwalt zipping
around left end from 29 yards
out for the Mustangs' first
score. The pat was wide right
and Heppner led 6-0.
Umatilla came back with two
scoring drives capped off by
touchdown passes from junior
quarterback Josh Dilley to Eric
Black and Jim Kurtz. The pats
were wide and Umatilla took

Koffler hit Zumwalt with a 32

Ben Ewing caught the pat for
a 14-12 halftime lead.

hitting position also had help
from Jossie Evans and Traci
Dickenson with two kills. An
ace from Mindy Binschus and
strong back row play from
Jessica Sumner seemed to help
fuel the fire as Heppner was
able to control an offensive at
tack from the Rockets, winning
game two 15-7.
Heppner started out strong
in the third game with Hepp-
ner's number one rotation of
Howard serving and setting
and Hisler coming up with the
kill. Heppner quickly took a 4-0
lead and hope of victory was
in the air. Line-up changes
along with unforced errors in
the back row, as well as at the
service line and net saw Hepp
ner's momentum take a nose
dive. Two net violations from
the Fillies helped Pilot Rock
come back to tie the score 6-6.
Hisler produced a side-out on
a kill and Dickenson evened
the score at 7. Tina Kemp came
up with a big dink set kill
behind Moeller's serving and
Sumner's passing to give hope
for Heppner. At 10-10, Moeller
came through with a back row
spike kill, but followed with a
spike out the back and a miss
ed tip. Moeller came back with
a dink kill to take the lead
13-12, but Heppner couldn't
hold on and the Rockets took
the game and match 16-14.
Howard had a productive
night at the serving line, going
16-18.
Heppner plays lone this
Thursday, Sept. 28, at Heppner
at 5 p.m. and will travel to
Athena Saturday, Sept. 30 for
a tournament that casts teams
from both the CBC and Wapiti
league.
