TWO - Heppner Gazette Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, June 28, 1995 Students earn R & W certificates The R & W Reading Program, sponsored by Tom and Helen Riehl of the R & W Drive-In of Heppner, recently concluded its ninth year at Heppner Elementary and Middle School. The Riehls originally estab lished this program as a way to encourage the development of a life-long reading habit. Students are rewarded with treats at the R & W Drive-In when they reach goals in reading established by their reading teachers. Goals are determined on an individual basis and vary according to the age and reading ability of the child. Students are challenged to read on a regular basis from a variety of levels of difficulty, authors and genres. Teachers involved in estab lishing goals for children were first grade Karen Clough and Cherry Webber; second grade Lea Calvert and Joy Krien; third grade Karen Dubuque and Cara Osmin; fourth grade Pat Hentges and Sharon Morris; fifth Pam Dowdy and Bill Ew ing, and sixth Dave Gunderson and Jannie Allen and reading specialist Linda Shaw'. This year 161 students earn ed 475 certificates. Twenty-nine first grade students earned 54 certificates; 33 second graders, 130 certificates; 30 third graders, 123; 27 fourth graders, 81; 28 fifth graders, 80; 13 sixth graders, 19. St. Patrick’s Senior Center Bulletin Board 5s There were 99 people present for the senior dinner June 21 and three meals were home delivered. Cora McDonald, Pendleton, won the meal ticket. Members of the Seventh-Day Adventist and the Nazarene churches served. Children from the vacation Bi ble school sang several numbers, which the seniors enjoyed very much. Blood pressures were taken before the meal. The menu for July 5 will be cold sliced turkey, three-bean salad, cantaloupe, bread, custard, tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes and onions. Members of the Methodist Church will serve. There will be hearing aid assistance at 10 a.m. and blood pressures taken at 11 a.m. The Red Cross held a blood drive at the Senior Center, Thurs day afternoon, June 22. It was well attended. Pioneer Memorial Hospital sponsored the drawing. Bus driver Dot Halvorsen with 10 passengers on board took the senior bus to the Condon meal site June 22, where a delicious meal was enjoyed. Dot Halvorsen won the free meal ticket. There was one table of cards in play Friday and 10 seniors en joyed the movie “ Goldie III" Sunday evening. The senior bus will leave for the Monument reunion at 8 a.m., Sunday, July 2 for a potluck dinner. Those attending should bring a lawn chair. The bus is scheduled to go to Milton-Freewater, Friday, July 14 at 9 a.m. The Garden Club will have a picnic at Gonty's cabin July 9. A trip to Gonty's cabin for a potluck picnic is planned July 23. The bus leaves Heppner at 1:30 p.m. Those attending should bring lawn chairs and food. Anyone wishing to ride the bus to lone for the fireworks should call Eleanor Gonty, 676-9264, the senior office, 676-9030, or stop by the office to sign up. There are not enough registered yet to take the bus.
