The reading program got underway last Friday and will be held at the Library in Heppner every Friday through July 14 beginning at 10:30 a.m. ♦ 1 • Students get ready for rodeo finals Many area high school rodeo students are practicing daily to prepare for the Oregon State High School Rodeo Association (OHSRA) finals to be held in Prineville, June 14-18. The top 20 contestants in the state in each event will compete in two goes for the opportuni ty to qualify for the short go on Sunday. Only the top 10 in the state in each event will compete on Sunday. The top four con testants after the short go will qualify for the National High School Rodeo finals to be held in Gillette, WY., in July. Over 350 Oregon Students compete. Heppner and Condon High Schools have qualified all of their student high school rodeo members for the state finals. The girls' team of Tiffanie Munkers and Katie McCoin are also in the number two position in team standings. Following are the OHSRA point standings going into state finals: All-around girl: Tiffanie Munkers, second, 156V2; and Lexi Matteson, fourth, 129, both Heppner High School; Katie McCoin, fifth, 121, Con don High School. Rookie girl: Lexi Matteson, second, 187; Annie Hisler, seventh, 58, HHS. All-around boy: Justin Mat teson, fourth, 113, HHS. Barrel Racing: Lexi Matteson, third, 56; Munkers, fifth, 42; McCoin, seventh, 39; Hisler, ninth, 37. Goat tying: Munkers, fifth, 55; McCoin, eighth, 37; Lexi Matteson, ninth, 27. Health care professionals in the local 10 county area: Mor row, Baker, Gilliam, Grant, northern Malheur, Sherman, Umatilla, Wallowa and W heeler, applied for the scholarships awarded by NEOAHEC. A total of eight winners received scholarships of $500 or more. Parents support group formed The Prevention/Early In tervention committee members for Morrow County have been working on establishing a parent's support group for the north and south ends of the county. This supportive group will work towards enhancing parents' resources in dealing with their children. The com mittee is in need of volunteer PLEASE CUP AND SAVE group facilitators for the parent and child groups in the Board- man/Irrigon and Lexington /Ione/Heppner areas. Volunteer positions will in volve three hours of work a week. The program prefers in dividuals who have some facilitating background, work ing knowledge of local re sources, and who are dedicated to help empower parents and children. G Central Red Apple e n u i n e C FFA team takes second at show The Heppner Future Farmers of America (FFA) Judging Team, consisting of Tina and Toni Kemp, Jossie Evans, Frank Martin and Willie DeBoer, plac ed second at the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show, at Union, June 7-9. Heppner was not far behind the first place team, Enterprise, as they were edged out of the top spot by just one point. Enterprise finished with 912 points and Heppner with 911 points. Other top five finishers were Union, third; Milton-Free- water, fourth; and Enterprise second team, fifth. A total of 18 advanced teams, consisting of n i: ï 'i five members each, competed, '.in. . The award is to be used for advanced training in her medical field of choice. Tar nasky will upgrade to physician assistant. She is currently the nursing supervisor at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Heppner. Community applicants who met the requirements were sent to the NEOAHEC screening committee.
