New records set by
HJH track team
The Heppner Junior High
track teams have participated in
three track meets, all held at
Umatilla High Schools's track
field. This years' team of 42 stu
dent athletes is one of the
largest turnouts after having 35
students in 1993. Many of the
athletes are turning in top per
formances to place in the top
six spots.
Due to the large number of
participants the in addition to
the red uniforms the team is
also using old blue and gold
uniforms from Heppner High
School. "With the seventh and
eighth graders moving to the
high school next year, and
uniform colors still undecided,
the exchange with the high
school uniforms was also a cost
effective measure," said coach
Susan Hisler, "even though for
those watching it can be very
confusing who Heppner is ."
Two old school records fell
April 7 at the first track meet.
The 1982 long jump record set
by Alex Lindsey at 17'9" was
broken by Derek Gunderson
17'11". Gunderson rebroke his
record April 21 jumping 18'3” .
The boys medley relay team
of Tim Dickenson, Casey
Evans, Brian Knowles and
Gunderson broke the old
record 3:19 with a time of 3:16.
The old record was set by Stacy
Lauritsen, Chris Jones, Shaun
Hisler and Eric Schonbachler in
1993. Other record breaking
hopefuls are Gunderson in the
200m, Levi Geer 400m, Abby
Kahl in the 400m, and Tony
Greenup in the shot, discus
and softball.
Heppner didn't participate in
the track meet April 28 due to
the Centennial exchange pro
gram. However, Amber Peck
competed at a meet held in
Portland while staying with her
host family. She took three first
place finishes in the 100m,
200m, and was a leg of the win
ning 4x100 relay.
The team travels to Umatilla

The Heppner M ustangs
downed Weston-McEwen on
the TigerScots home turf Tues
day, April 25, 7-4.
Rod Zumwalt started the
game on a positive note with a
home run in the first inning.
The M ustangs held the
TigerScots in the first five inn
ings with good defensive play.
Chris Dickenson, on the
mound for Heppner, got lots of
backup help. Heppner's bats
remained quite until the fourth
when Dickenson walked on
base and stole second followed
by Chad Skroch who singled,
and also stole a base, putting
them both in scoring position.
Trent Hughes hit a single scor
ing Dickenson and Josh Coiner
flew out but scored Skroch. In
the fifth Brian Koffler,-on a roll,
doubled followed by a single
from Zumwalt to score Koffler
and Dickenson hit a two run
home run to put the score at.
The TigerScots scored two in
that inning with four singles in
the inning to retire the inning
6-2 Heppner. Heppner came
back in the sixth for their last
run when Hughes doubled and
made it home on some wild
pitches.
The TigerScots last chance to
come back came in the bottom
of the seventh but they came
up on the short end with Brody
making it to first on a fielders
choice, Perkins getting a single,
both of whom eventually
scored.

The Heppner M ustangs

two runs until the last inning.
Chris Dickenson had nine
strike outs for the Mustangs.
Rod Zumwalt walked on
base in the first inning and was
hit in by Trent Hughes who
singled. Eric Schonbachler
doubled in the second but the
Mustangs couldn't get him in
to score. All was quite on both
sides until the fifth when Zum

ed. Hughes singled scoring
Zumwalt and Dickenson
scored on an error.
Heppner's defense held the
Tigers until the seventh inning
when they threatened with two
runs and were in position to
take the win away from Hepp
ner. Bad coaching and running
judgment helped the Mustangs
hold onto their win. Bases were
loaded with one out when
Dickenson struck out the se

was walked on got picked off
on third ending the game.
