TEN - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 8, 1995 Letters to the Editor Re-elect Lindsay and Healy to Port To the Editor: In these times of continuous change and new challenges we need the experience and good judgement of Larry Lindsay and Jerry Healy on the Port of Morrow. Larry has served Morrow County well, helping bring new industries to lessen the tax load of Morrow County residents. Jerry Healy is an active com munity member and is ded icated to the needs of Morrow County. For future results, we need to re-elect Larry Lindsay and Jerry Healy to the Morrow County Port Commission. (s) John Murray No other alternatives, vote yes on bond To the Editor: We would like to encourage the citizens of Morrow County to join us and vote yes on the Morrow County School bond. The passage of this bond levy will help insure the much need ed new classrooms in the north end to help reduce over crowding. It will also help make needed repairs and to im prove technology education programs thoughout the dis trict. Like many of you, we too were opposed to the 7-12 con- ! figuration, but yet understand the crisis situation our school district faces. In reviewing op tions we can see there are no other alternatives. Also, we would like to con gratulate Morrow County residents who have written let ters to our legislators on behalf of education. We believe we are making an impact. Keep up the good work. We can make a difference. Larry has served as a Com missioner for many years and provides a stable reference for the commission as they con sider the many issues that come before them. Larry's years of experience are especially im portant now while the Port managaer is incapacitated. John Grace and Jerry Healy were recently appointed to the Commission and are only now becoming aware of the breadth and depth of the operational business of the Port. They have done very well thus far and are proving themselves to be Our children deserve opportunities To the Editor: Have you ever stood and watched something fall apart and then self-destruct? It isn't pretty, but it is entertaining. You have the opportunity to be highly entertained in up coming weeks; a drama on a more local level than L. A. is un folding right now in your own com m unities in Morrow County. Recent bond issues have con sistently failed, some by only a narrow margin, as we continue to experience unabated growth and crowding that begs for relief in some of our schools. I spoke last year of meeting with a student group at city' hall due to lack of classroom space. This year we have students utilizing storage space as a classroom. The board and superintendent have adopted frugal measures which have reduced budgetary' expenditures by hundreds of thousands of dollars. The school week has been shorten ed, cutting transportation ex penses and some staff salaries. The bond proposed last Sep tember has been reduced by more than $2,000,000. At this time, staffs are being combined and programs are be ing eliminated in an effort to be more cost effective. These measures will take place whether the currently propos ed bond issue passes or fails. To the Editor: I don't know how many of our subscribers caught a sneak peak of something on Channel 26 a couple of weeks ago but Heppner T.V. Inc was taking a look at a new network called Home and Garden TV. I, for one fell head over heels en thralled. All my old favorites on the Home Show now had their own V 2 hour show to instruct us on informative tips to do with home remodeling, repairs, decorating, crafts, sewing and gardening. A perfect channel for the person interested in their home and more and more of us are these days. The statistics are showing, we, as the middle class spend $1,000 or more on our homes each year and a lot of that is in our yard and remodeling. I have had numerous folks call or stop by to let me know they really Stan Kemp sinks hole-in-one • Gazette-Times 676-9228 Copy Paper Ream • Carton Gazette-Times 676-9228 valuable additions to the Commisssion. In the past, the election has resulted in representation from each area of the Port district. The interest of the Port and the electorate have been well serv ed by this broad representa tion. We hope the residents of Morrow County will see fit to continue the geographic separation of the members of the Commission of the Port of Morrow. We urge you to vote for Larry Lindsay, Jerry Healy and John Grace to represent you on the Port of Morrow Commission. (s) John L. Bristow President, Port of Morrow (s) Daniel A. Creamer Commissioner, Port of Morrow However, in the event that the bond is defeated by even one vote, additional programs will be eliminated. I am heart-sick at the prospect. So tune in on Morrow Coun ty. You can watch if things fall apart because everyone had a personal agenda. You can pick Up the paper and read about angry voters who have slashed programs featuring business and/or technical education, art, music, homemaking, media. Not all at once in every school, but here and there. It's like having the chance to watch a victim bleed to death. When does "cutting" become carn age? Those with the hearts and ears to hear, listen. We don't need to agree about anything but one thing: our children and youth deserve the number and quality of opportunities that others enjoy. I plan to vote for the school district bond issue. Kids should not be victimized because of personal biases. We need to be proactive in plann ing as we continue to grow, working with the board and superintendent to develop a long range vision for our schools. Vote yes for the bond issue. Urge friends to do the same. After this channel appeared I had one call from a subscriber who was most upset we had even considered this program ming. He wants CSpan. We now have CSpan to watch by his insistence to the Board of Directors. This is not a perma nent channel but the board did opt to take off WGN on Chan nel 19 and something will replace it in April. Drop by the office to let me know what your preference is.
