The Heppner Chapter was initiated into the National organization in 1937. The chapter recently participated in the Blue Mountain District Leadership Contest. Activities ,n the contest included parliam en tary p ro ced u re, public speaking, agriculture business management tests and a cooperative quiz. John Qualls placed first in the district in ag business manage ment and Willie DeBoer placed third. Qualls also placed se cond in the coop quiz contest and Mike Aldritt placed third. The chapter completed against Hermiston, Pendleton and Milton-Freewater. 5th annual lamb cookoff set The 5th annual St. Patrick's Day Lamb Cook-off is schedul ed for Saturday, March 18 in Heppner. The cooking com petition is one of the highlights of the St. Patrick's Day Celebra tion, said a spokesperson. Cooks of all ages are eligible to participate. Entries must be received by Friday, March 10. Entry forms are available from Maureen Krebs, event coor dinator, Cecil Star Route, lone, 97843 or the office of the O regon S heep G row ers Association. The competition is held at Skagg's Auto Clinic (the old Farley M otor C om pany building), 126 E. May Avenue. On-site cooking begins at 8 a.m. with judging at 10 a.m. Cooks may bring their lamb dish already prepared or arrive early and prepare it on site. Electrical outlets are available for cooking equipm ent or special arrangements may be made with Krebs. The number of entries for the Lamb Cook-Off has increased each year, last year 19 adults and students competed. In terested contestants are en couraged to register early for this year's event. Categories are barbecue, con ventional and miscellaneous in adult and student divisions. Students, school age through college, will compete for two scholarship awards donated by the Oregon Sheep Commis sion: first $100, second $50. Adults compete for a grand prize of two nights lodging at Driftwood Shores in Florence, courtesy of Lee Babcock and 3-K Livestock, Brownsville. Other prizes include fresh cuts of lamb donated by Superior Farms, Hermiston. Samples of barbecued lamb will be available for tasting beginning at 10 a.m. Samples of the cook-off entries will also be available for tasting im m ed iately follow ing the judging. The Lamb Cook-Off is joint ly sponsored by the Oregon Sheep Growers Association, Oregon Sheep Commission and H eppner's St. Patrick's Day Committee.
