It's better to give than receive, right? Hopefully Christmas giv ing has not bled your resources to the bone as the IRS is next in line. Now people can file their short form income taxes by computer or even telephone in that information that is recorded on a com puter. Supposedly that method will provide a quicker return for those who have already paid taxes through salary deductions. However most businesses, on either the accrual or cash basis, must undergo a lengthy procedure of listing business deductions, sources of income and avoid crafty remarks about the state of one's health after completing their income tax preparations. Casino players replicate farmers and ranchers. Only a soothsayer with infinite wisdom can predict a profitable income on any given year. Like other businesses the amount of sales and services depends on whether there is money left over for income taxes. However if one is worth more dead than alive, your banker loans you money to pay for necessities on the chance that you'll find a payback method to stave off collecting from your life insurance. Juggling farm deductions against farm income is somewhat like which came first, the chicken or the egg. If eggs from chickens are eaten by a farm family, then the chicken feed can't be called a business expense. Yet if those chickens produce enough eggs to sell, but not enough to pay for their feed, maybe it's time to have chicken soup before listing chicken feed as a business expense. In reality, one should determine how many days a stock dog works and how much dog food is consumed per day in order to ascertain the correct amount of dog food business expense. Of course that dog is doing guard duty while riding around in the back of a pickup. I hope the IRS doesn't find out that our dog's anti-theft talents are limited to licking a burglar to death. Livestock owners should preface telephone calls with an in quiry as to what part of a cow a caller is willing to buy, lease, sustain or whatever. One should also promote the use of left over fertilizer for city dwellers' yards. That way all phone bills could qualify as a business expense. Going back to horse and buggy days might be simpler when it comes to figuring fuel taxes. Odometer readings don't always jive when figuring the off-road fuel consumption miles, particular ly when trying to locate an amorous bull seeking romance in far off places. Farm and ranch wives should always buy a nail or a bolt when making a trip to town, that obviously makes that trip a business expense. In spite of a varied assortment, my supply never yields the right hardware for a job. Mayber it's because our so-called shop is a war zone to be approached by only risk-taking family members. Old Dobbin can also be considered a business expense even when an ensnared roper turns the scene into an Ace Reid type cartoon saga. Four-wheelers take less fuel than hay burners, but they seldom give you as lofty a view of the range as when one ascends from the sky due to a surprise launching from back of a bucking horse. There are many other tax tips I could offer. However, they might make as much as much sense as all those hoops that lan downers had to go through in order to register ponds.
