With fair time rapidly ap proaching, District 5 Director, Maureen Krebs, reminds potent tial contestants that one garment may be used for both events if the fabric is at least 60 percent wool. District contests are held around the state with winners in the junior and senior categories advancing to state level compe- tion. The state contest is held in conjunction with the Oregon Sheep Grower’s Convention scheduled for December 3 in Hood River. A state junior and senior winner then advance to the national competition which will be held in Washington, DC, in February. Last year’s senior divi sion champion from District 5, Jimi Kaye Alexander of Milton- Freewater, advanced to the na tional contest where she placed fifth. Maureen Krebs directs District 5 which includes residents of Gilliam, Morrow, Umatilla, Wasco, Sherman, Hood River and Wheeler counties. The con test is open to men and women in four age groups Pre-teen (12 6 under), Junior (13-16), Senior (17-24) and Adult (over 24). Garments are initially judged on the entrant with appropriate accessories. Judges look for cur rent fashion, appropriateness of fabric and style ot the entrant, fit, poise and presentation. After modeling, garments are judged on inner contruction and durability. The deadline for entries is Oc tober 28. Entry information is available by writing Maureen Krebs, Cecil Star Route, lone, OR 97843 or by calling (503) 422-7548. th e c o n ta in e r. Flores will be part of the Oregon delegation attending the 1994 National 4-H Youth Con gress in Orlando, Fla., in December. This is the first time the event has been held outside of Chicago, its home for the last 72 years. In additon to a change in loca tion, states are free to decide the make-up of their delegations and, for the first time, young people who participate in Extension youth programs outside the tradi tional 4-H club program are eligi ble to attend. Flores and Russ Mathiasen of Corvallis both fit this category. Flores, a 1994 graduate of Riverside High School, was selected on the basis of personal development and leadership. He was a facilitator of the Hispanic Youth Leadership Conference for young people in Morrow and Umatilla Counties. In school, he was active in athletics anr| a counselor for the Outdoor Educa tion program. In the community, he is a volunteer football and wrestling coach, volunteers with Ducks Unlimited and is active in the multicultural club called “ Los Amigos.” His trip to 4-H Congress is sponsored by the.
