Johnston J a m es B. “ Sam ” Johnston, 73. o f Heppner, died Friday. July 15. 1994 at his home. Recitation o f the rosary was Monday July 18 at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Heppner. Funeral Mass was Tuesday, July 19 at the church with concluding service and burial at the Heppner Masonic C em e tery. Mr. Johnston was born March 12, 1921, at Hepp ner. to Allen and Mary McDaid Johnston. He grew up in Heppner and attend ed local schools, graduating from Heppner High School in 1940. He entered the m ilitary and served with the U.S. Arm y during W orld W ar II, returning to Heppner in 1945. On July 8, 1947, he m ar ried Lois M. V an ce at Lewiston, Idaho. T h ey liv ed in Heppner where he worked at Kinzua Mill for 33 years retiring in 1977. He also did janitorial work at the Bank o f Eastern Oregon for several years. He was a mem ber o f the Pendleton Eagles Lodge. Survivors include daugh ters, Jennifer Morrell o f H erm siton and P am ela Partlow of Boatdman: sons, Richard and Gregory, both of Heppner: sister, Annie Wilson o f Heppner; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His wife Lois, died in 1991 and a half-brother and several half-sisters also died earlier. Memorial contributions m ay be made to Pioneer Memorial Hospital Founda tion, PO Box 515, Heppner 97836.
