Closed fire season was declared on the John Day Unit within the central Oregon district of the Oregon Department of Forestry Monday June 27. During closed fire season.open burning is restricted except by permit. The following requirements for forest operations are now in ef fect. Equipment must be equip ped with spark arresters and fire extinguishers. Fire tools must be carried. Watchman service is re quired. Smoking is prohibited within an operation area. These restictions and re quirements apply to lands pro tected by the Oregon Department of Forestry in Morrow, Gilliam, Grant, Harney, Umatilla and Wheeler Counties. Anyone who would like to obtain a burning permit or for more information contact the Oregon Department of Forestry in John Day, 575-1139; Monument, 934-2300; or in Fossil; 763-2575. Fireworks banned from forests The nation's birthday is ap proaching again. Many people enjoy celebrating the Fourth of July in the National Forests, but the Forest Service is asking peo ple to leave the fireworks at home. For safety and fire precaution reasons, all types of fireworks are prohibited in National Forests, even sparklers and smokebombs. They can produce enough heat to easily start a forest or range fire, especially in this dry. summer weather, said a press release. The Forest Service offers precautions for campers in the forest: don’t leave a fire unattend ed, use the fire rings in developed campgrounds, and always keep a shovel and bucket of water near the campfire. During fire season, woodcut ters and campers should be aware of the industrial fire precaution level (IFPL) when they visit the forest. The IFPL is designed to alert forest visitors of possible fire danger and inform them of any restrictions on forest use. It is figured daily according to w eather factors such as temperature, wind speed, fuel m oisture, hum idity. and precipitation. i T—f—r i r~* 1 r r n r McCall's Sew for Finì Style Show and Dessert Thursday, July 7 7 00 pm St. Pat's Parish Hall 560 Jones St - Heppner Fabrics from many cultures Western Wear Mo.
