Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 4, 1994 - THREE Tina Kemp attends leadership program Golf tourney raises funds for district Heppner High School sophomore Tina Kemp joined more than 200 sophomore leaders from throughout the state at the Oregon Youth Leadership Hugh O ’Brian Youth Foundation seminar held in Wilsonville, April 14-17. The Oregon Youth Leadership Seminar, HOBY, brings together a select group of high school sophomores so that they can in teract with groups of distinguish ed leaders in business, govern ment, education and the profes sions to discuss present and future issues. The goal is to provide the youths a unique forum for learn ing about the American incentive system and democratic process and for broadening their understanding of their leadership potential and quest for self development. The seminar challenges them to think about the world around them and what they, as the future leaders, have to do to positively influence business, government and society. They also better understand that their goals and dreams are important and that leaders have extreme respon sibility in whatever walk of life they pursue, said a press release. The Hugh O’Brian Youth Foundation was established by actor Hugh O’Brian following a visit to Africa where he was in spired by a meeting with Dr. Albert Schweitzer. “ One of the things Schweitzer said to me was that the most im portant thing in education was to teach young people to think for themselves,” O’Brian says. “ From that inspiration, and with the support of others who believe in youth and the American Dream, I started HOBY to seek out, recognize, develop and reward outstanding leadership potential among our nation’s youth.” Spring concert slated May 5 The spring music program for Heppner Middle School and High School students will be held Thursday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m. at the Heppner Junior High School gym. Everyone is invited to attend. Admission is free. Famous Heppner Events More than 60 participants turn ed out for the “ Fun” golf tour nament at the Willow Creek Country Club in Heppner April 22. The fund raising tournament was sponsored by the volunteers for 4-H and extension service district. The purposes of the tour nament were to have fun and to raise campaign funds for costs associated with the upcoming November election issue. Extension Advisory Council members Geri Grieb, Ruth McCabe, Doug Drake, LaVonne Mader and Bob Jepsen were among the tournament volunteers. Members of the Pine City, North Morrow and Rhea Creek Family Community Education study groups prepared and serv ed the lunch meal and snacks. John Edmundson organized all aspects of the event. Harold Kerr, retired OSU Extension agent and originator of the legendary “ Harold got a birdie” shot, en couraged all players to “ have fun. ” Carol Kerr served as tour nament statistician. Roger Fletcher, OSU Exten sion associate director, also par ticipated in the “ scramble” tournament. Winning teams were: first, Pranger, Waterland, Gilbert and Swanson; second-Bailey, Flet cher and Turner; third was a tie tffr * between the teams of Marshall. f a Padberg and Lovgren and Ed mundson and Drake. Gene Pierce (I) and Sam Bellamy, prepare to tee-oft Special event winners were: KP second shot-Bailey; long putt- Jepsen; third thot-Jepsen, Palmer. Pranger and Kerr. Notable shot winners were: Christy Lovgren, chip in #2 for a birdie; Pat Edmundson, chip in #8 for a birdie; Ken Turner, ball hit on a back swing; Roland Bergstrom, 30’ birdie putt on #9; Frank Anderson, chip in #17 and Jim Swanson, extraordinary track shot. 1 . . - Conklin to coach in Camp Classic Heppner High School athletic director and track coach Dale Conklin will be a part of the coaching staff at the 4th Annual Robin Marks Track & Field Camp Classic set July 5-9 at Lewis and Clark College. Conklin, who has been head track coach at Heppner High School for the past 18 years, the 1986 Oregon 2A coach for the China tour, coach for the 1988 Boys’ A State Championship and the OHSCA track coach of the year, will coach throws at the camp. Three people will coach sprints and hurdles, two each will coach distances/middle distances, throws and jumps and one will coach race walking. Also on the staff is a chiropractic sports physician. Camp director is Robin Marks. Marks has six years coaching experience at the high school level, has qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials twice, has been a NCAA finalist twice, an NCAA qualifier and a NCAA champion in 400 mh. The track camp will have two sessions, session I for athletes eight to 13 years and session II for those 14-18. Registration before June 21 is $75. After that date the cost is $100. Last year Camp Classic award ed $825 in athletic scholarships to track and field programs at six different schools. Each athlete has an opportunity to win an athletic scholarship during the “ mini-grand prix” inter-camp competition.
