Fossil 2 p.m.-6 p.m. By Claudia Hughes. Chamber Manager National Tourism Week is May 2-6. Chamber members had an opportunity to hear a tourism assessment of Heppner during a recent meeting. The suggestion was to create a sportsman's destination community offering farm/ranch recreation oppor tunities. That of course, takes ac tive participants and interested ranchers who are anxious to host visitors and send ehtm into Hepp ner to shop, visit our museum, etc. Those surveyed seemed to agree that they didn't wish to become a Sisters or Leaven worth; however, being attractive to visitors on a small scale would benefit our local businesses and retailers. The following ideas sur faced to encourage families to make Heppner their destination “ where rural is for real” : pad dle boats at the lake, miniature golf (leprechaun land ). remote- controlled boat race events at the lake, cross-country ski-trails; trees and a wheelchair accessible path all around the lake catering to both volkswalkers and han dicapped, Shorty's museum, ranch experiences and the list goes on. Our comfort zone has been threatened and above all Heppner needs diversity both in industry and recreation. That means some creative brainstorming is needed to come up with viable ideas to attract all types of visitors to Heppner. those who w ill come to visit and those who will create jobs. In conjunction with National Tourism Week, an Oregon Rural Loop Tour Project (Regional Tourism Workshop) is schedul ed for Wednesday. May 11. at the Pendleton Convention Center. The purpose will be to develop a tour package organized around a series of tourist centers in rurai communities where visitors would have options ranging from guided tours of forests, to visiting ranches to learning about our rural environment from those who know it best, the local peo ple who live and work in the area. Everyone is welcome to attend. Time is 9 a m. to 12 noon and the cost is free. Next week: Chamber business and board meeting. Thought for the week: “ There is no hopeless situations, only people who are hopeless about them” . Marriage Licenses The Clerk’s office at the cour thouse in Heppner reports issu ing the following marriage licenses during the past week: April 12: Scott Ray Davis, 23, Spokane, WA.; and Katherine Elizabeth Doherty, 23, Spokane.
