FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times. Heppner. Oregon Wednesday. February 23, 1994 Fillies headed for playoffs Mustangs blast TigerScots, claim CBC championship title 12 points on the night. The Mustangs used some great defense and solid offense to get a 34-25 halftime lead. Sam Sumner had 10 of his game high 19 points in the first half and got the TigerScots 6’8” Aaron Verkist and 6’7” Bill Albert in foul trouble. The Mustangs were aided by the steady play of senior Rick Koffler. who had eight assists and junior Chris Dickenson who came off the bench for nine points and played great defense, along with Hughes, on Curt Sloan. Sloan and Louie Quaempts each had 11 points for the TigerScots. Heppner will play Sherman County Friday. Feb. 25. in an afternoon game at the Pendleton Convention Center. The winner will play again Saturday after noon for the District 7 2A cham pionship and the top seed into the Regional Tournament the follow ing weekend in Pendleton. Photo by Joyce Hughes Kelsie Evans goes for layin for Fillies The Heppner Fillies secured a spot in the District 2A playoffs this weekend, but not as the number one seed, as the Fillies lost to the visiting Weston- McEwen TigerScots last Friday. Feb. 18. 56-51, in a disappoin ting last home game. The Fillies came out hot mak ing their first six baskets for a quick 12-0 lead but the TigerScots answered back cutting the Fillies lead to three points at the end of the first quarter and hung on to the lead going into the half TigerScots 24. Heppner 23. Despite her third quarter injury when she fell hard on her knee Weston-McEwen star Tammy Pupo finished the game with 14 points for the TigerScots. TigerScot coach Mike Lieullen said that Pupo will probably not see any action during district tournament but hopes to have her back, should they advance. Jodi Johnston and Holli Eckman each scored 12 points for the Fillies. The Junior Varsity beat Weston-McEwen’s JV team in a close game 38-36. Feb. 18. in their last home game. In the process the Mustangs clinch- ed the CBC championship and the fills place seed into the district tournament Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25 and 26 at the Pendleton Convention Center in Pendleton. Feb. 19 for a 66-41 victory. The Mustangs finished the regular season with an 11-1 league record and a 16-4 season record. The Mustangs broke on top for a 14-9 first quarter lead in a rat ty start. The second quarter was all Sam Sumner. The 6'3” senior, who is averaging 13.5 points over the last seven games, exploded for 13 points in the quarter and had as many points as the entire Viking team at the half. Heppner led 33-17. The second half was more of the same. Senior Dwayne Dunaway led the Mustangs and finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. Sumner ended up with 23 points and eight rebounds and junior Chirs Dickenson grabbed seven boards. Junior Shawn Tracy paced the Vikings with 10 points IHS juniors put on taco feed By Anne Morter lone High School's junior class will sponsor a taco feed and pep assembly for the boys and girls basketball teams going to the state basketball tournament on Mon day, Feb. 28. The taco dinner will be served from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Ione cafeteria. The pep assembly will follow at 7:30 p.m. in the gym. Dinner will include tacos, bean dish and chips, jello salad and beverage.
