Burkenbines hear news of LA quake
Lloyd Burkenbine of Heppner,
reports that his two grandaughters
who live in Los Angeles made it
through the Jan. 17 earthquake
without serious consequences.
The girls, both of w hom are at
tending college in the Los
Angeles area, called the Burken
bines Monday to let their grand
parents know that they were safe.

The 4-H New Leader Training
has been rescheduled for Mon
day, January 24 from 5:30 p.m.
to 8 p.m. at the Morrow County
Extension office in Heppner.
The following topics will be
covered: club start-up, club
management, risk management,
(including insurance coverage,
child abuse, club financial
management). There will be a
question and answer session to
discuss any concerns the new
leaders may have about their
situation.
This is planned as a new leader
and Chris that she was scared
more than anything else. Michelle
Burkenbine. however, reported
that she and her roommate were
both thrown from their beds and
that the older house in which she
was living was “ totally trashed”
by the quake. The girls said that
the damage was “ far worse than
early reports.”

HHS Boosters plan chili feed
The Heppner High School
Booster Club’s annual chili feed
will be held during the basketball
game against Sherman on Satur
day. January 22 from 2:30 p.m.
to 6:30 p.m. at the Heppner High
School cafeteria.
The meal will include chili,
baked potatoe, French bread,
homemade pie and punch. Prices
are $5 for adults and $2 for
children six and under. The cost
for pie and coffee is $1.

GEODC office.
The agenda will begin with the
discussion of the South Morrow
County gap study and the survey
instruments that will be used for

reference to its possible listing as

Shepherd Community Hospital in
Hermiston. The baby weighed 8

Ryan Alan Haskins-a son
Ryan Alan was bom to Laura and
Alan Haskins of Boardman on
January 4, 1994 at Good
Shepherd Community Hospital in
Hermiston. The baby weighed 8
lbs. 2 oz.

The District Attorney’s office
at the courthouse in Heppner
reports handling the following
business during the past week:
Tim Weathly of Boardman,
failed to appear on January 13 for
arraignment on a charge of Illegal
Possession
of
Metham-
phetamines. A bench warrant was
issued for his arrest;
Greg Martin Jenson, of
Wheeler County, was convicted
January 13 of Rape III, The
charges stem from an alleged
consensued rape of a 14 year old
girl in a campground near Hep
pner during hunting season. He
will be sentenced in Wheeler
County where he is facing addi
tional sexual charges;
Dean Reikofsky, formerly of
Irrigon. was convicted January 5
on charges of Assault IV. The
conviction stems from an incident
where he allegedly attacked a
man with a chain in Irrigon.
Reikofsky was sentenced to 180
days in jail, suspended on the
condition that he attend an anger
and alcohol inpatient treatment,
pay a fine, costs, restitution and
court appointed attorney fees.

Thomas,son of Melvin Thomas
of Irrigon recently completed
recruit training.
During the training cycle with
Headquarters and Service Bat
talion, Marine Corps Recruit
Depot, San Diego, recruits are
taught the basics of battlefield
survival, introduced to typical
military daily routine, and per
sonal and professional standards.
All recruits participate in an ac
tive physical conditioning pro
gram and gain proficiency in a
variety of military skills including
first aid, rifle marksmanship and
close-order drill. Teamwork and
self-discipline are emphasized
throughout the cycle.
Air Force Airman Thomas
M. Riehl has graduated from the
electrical power production
specialist course at Sheppard Air
Force Base. Wichita Falls,
Texas.
Students were taught basic
electricity and electronics applica
tions, and the operation and
maintenance of electrical power
generation equipment.
Riehl is the son of Tom and
Helen Riehl. Heppner.

Mother Nature seems to be
playing tricks on us. Seems like
April with deer and cattle con
tentedly grazing on the hillsides,
lawns beginning to turn green,
two pheasants in battle over a
lone female, and 54 degrees at
8:30 a.m. There are probably a
few avid golfers visible on the
course. However, my calendar
says it’s January 18 and time to
buckle down on events to come
instead of having a bad case of
spring fever.
One hundred eighty-seven
folks crowded into the Elks for
the Town and Country banquet,
as well-deserving volunteers were
honored and some great laughs
were shared with the Slob Sisters.
We appreciate Kinzua, Jordan
Elevator. Morrow Soil and Water
Conservation District. Oregon
Wheat League. Pendleton Grain
G rowers, Cargill, Bank of
Eastern Oregon, First Interstate
Bank and Morrow County Grain
Growers, whose donations helped
make the speakers possible. Ad
ditional contributions have been
pledged. It’s everyone working
together, including high school
servers and the Garden Club who
make this annual event a reality
for Heppner.
