Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, November 3, 1993 - FIVE TigerScots claim league championship end Mustang winning streak 25-14 The W eston-M cEw en TigerScots beat the Heppner Mustangs in the trenches and that translated into a 25-14 victory over the visiting Mustangs last Friday, Oct. 29 at Athena. The win clinched the league cham pionship for Weston-McEwen in the CBC and brings on a must win situation for Heppner Friday night Nov. 5 at the fairgrounds in Heppner, as they face the Umatilla Vikings for a spot in the OSAA 2A football playoffs. The winner will travel to Vale to face the Vale Vikings, the winners of the Wapiti league for the fourth year in a row. The Mustangs brought a huge contingent of fans to Athena to cheer them on. It took the i ’gerScots only four plays to let the Mustangs know they were for real. Senior halfback Chet Mills broke over left tackle and cut right leaving Mustang tacklers grabbing for air as he raced for a 61 yard touchdown gallop to put them up 6-0. The pat was blocked. Meanwhile the Mustangs were going three plays and punt as they were having a difficult time figur ing out the TigerScot defense. Weston-McEwen scored on its first possession in the second quarter on a 10 play 55 yard drive, all on the ground. Mills did most of the damage with five runs for 27 yards. He gained 144 yards on 23 carries for the evening. Halfback Tony Minkler punched it over from the one yard line with 7:18 left in the half. The pat run was no good and it was 12-0. Heppner finally got a drive go ing with their next possession. The big play was a 43 yard Hanker pass from Len Brittner to Chris Dickenson. Kevin Payne and Jim Tellechea packed the ball close to the goal line and Rick Koffler used two quarterback sneaks to bring the Mustangs within six. The pat was short and it was 12-6 at the half. The TigerScots used their first possession of the second half to extend their lead. The nine play 57 yard drive was all on the ground and they led 19-6 after quarterback Jerrod Steele ran into the end zone with 5:30 left in the quarter. Heppner came right back and answered the TigerScots with a 66 yard scoring drive of their own. The Mustangs used two trick plays to do the damage. Halfback Chris Dickenson hit quarterback Koffler with a 35 yard pass completion to advance the Mustangs. Dickenson then hit Brittner with a 28 yard scoring pass with 1:33 remaining in the third quarter. Koffler hit Brittner in the end zone for the pat and Heppner was down only 19-14 heading into the fourth quarter. W eston-M cEw en put the Mustangs in a hole with a punt to the Heppner three yard line with 8:18 left in the game. The Mustangs couldn't move the ball and with 6:39 left, went for a Cardinals lose tough game to Condon Devils fourth and three. They were stuff ed and the TigerScots took over on the Mustang 12 yard line. The Mustangs dodged one bullet when a Steele touchdown run was called back on a holding penalty. They dodged another when Brittner intercepted a Steele pass, Brittner’s second pick of the night. The Mustangs last possession ended with a Chet Mills pass in terception with 4:18 remaining. The TigerScots scored a clinching touchdown on a Steele run to make the final margin 25-14. The Mustangs played hard but Lady Cards head to state By Anne Morter The lone lady Cardinals finish ed the last week of the regular season with one win and two losses but they still head to the district tournament as the second place team from the west division of the Big Sky Conference. The district tournament starts Thursday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. at Hermiston High School when the two number one teams, Condon and Dufur, clash for the cham pionship. lone plays the second game against the other number two team (which appeared at press time to be Wasco County). A win there would put them up against the loser of the first game for the second place spot. “ Any of the four teams could go (to state),” commented coach Greg Likens. “ Its just a matter of who wants to win the most,” he said. Volleyball playoffs Saturday The Heppner Fillies won the second Rlace spot in the state Class 2A playoffs by beating the Stanfield Tigers and Pilot Rock Rockets in district tournament play held in Heppner on Satur day, Oct. 30. The Fillies advance to the Class 2A playoffs and will travel to Vale and face the Vikings, the number one team from the Wapiti League on Saturday, Nov. 6. Game time is 1 p.m. Mountain Time. Weston-McEwen had clinched a spot in the state playoff bypass ing the district tournament, going into the playoff as the number one team. The Mustangs can still make the playoffs with a win over the C-Team season ends with losses The Heppner Fillies C-team ended their season with losses to Stanfield, Riverside and Weston- McEwen. The girls fought hard and came up short, being defeated in two games against each opponent. In the first contest against Stan field JV’s the Fillies battled to a 5-6 score before Stanfield pulled ahead and won 5-15. In the next game the Tigers were ahead 1-13 and then the Fillies managed to put together a surge but it was too late as they lost 4-15. The Riverside Pirates proved to be a strong opponent for the young Heppner team as they easi ly won 5-15 and 9-15. In the first game Riverside jumped to an ear ly lead and never looked back as Heppner had problems with ser ving and net play. In the follow ing contest, Heppner struggled 0-5 before they came up with some points. They were lead by setter Toni Kemp with four points but fell short of the victory. The Fillies played their last game at Athena and fell 4-15 and 14-16 to the TigerScots. After a disastrous first game the Fillies battled point for point to lose 14-16 in the second. The lady Cards took control of the first game until the score was tied 9-9. Then, they started to make mistakes, allowing the league leading Blue Devils to gain the momentum and take the game. The second game found the Cards playing strongly, in control all the way, except for one rally by Condon. But by the third game, the Cards came out play ing tentative ball and never got in Cardinals lose to Dufur the game. Five first serve misses cost the Cardinals dearly. “ You can’t do that against a good team and expect to win,” commented coach Greg Likens. Mary Jane McCarty had a good night, with 16 of 16 serving, nine points and 14 of 17 hitting with eight kills. Melissa McElligott was a force at the net with 38 of 41 hitting with 13 kills. She also had two stuff blocks. April Taylor was strong defen sively as well as scoring nine points on 15 of 16 serving. The Cards started the game looking tough but after a couple of blocks, they became intimidated and tentative. Dufur took advantage of the situation to play one of their best games all season.
