T hirteen year-old Masao Kobayashi of Tokyo didn’t know much English when he came to stay with the Molly and Cecil Rill family of Heppner, through a 4-H LABO exchange program, but he somehow seemed to com municate with the two Rill boys, Lonnie. 14 and especially Leland, nine. Molly says that Masao and Leland both love to play Ninten do and Masao has beaten all of Lonnie's video games. Also since his arrival July 27, Masao has learned to say “ chicken nuggets,” which Mol ly says he likes. Masao also likes hamburgers and pizza, she adds, and has learned to sing “ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” But Masao hasn't spent all of his time in America as a “ couch potato". The Rill family has taken him on a series o f Leland Rill and Masao Kobayashi enjoy the fair excursions-to Seattle, where he went on top of the Space Needle. Lehm an Hot Springs, the Umatilla County Fair and, of course, the Morrow County Fair. Masao also helped with harvest, rode on a combine and attended a 4-H meeting at the Kay and Rosco Qualls place where he rode horses. Although communication was difficult at times. Molly said that Masao was good natured. "W e really enjoyed him ." she said. Masao left the Rills’ home Aug. 22 for Tokyo where he lives with his mother and his sister Mio. 11.
