The Justice Court office at the courthouse annex building in Heppner reports handling the following business during the past week: Michael Roy Robertson, 23, Pendleton-Exceeding the Max imum Speed Limit, 71 mph in a 55 mph zone, $76 fine; A n d G ive H im the Best S ta rt Possible! Each year we ask our cows to breed and produce calves that will maximize our productivity and profitability We demand this performance, often while grazing in adverse weather conditions and feeding a diet of native grass and hay usually deficient in many essential nutrients. Meeting the basics of protein, energy, calcium and phosphorus is paramount, but that’s not enough. Filling the total nutritional picture with the proper micronutrient balance is also critical areas is the culture, heritage and way-of-life that Mr. Kerr finds so “ aesthetically displeasing” . On behalf of Eastern Oregon Visitors Association I would like to assure the residents o f Lake County, as well as the other eight counties represented in our organization, that the members of the tourism industry within our region have no intent to pit visitors against ranchers or log gers. The enhancement of the tourism industry within Baker, Grant, Harney, Lake, Malheur, M orrow, Union, Umatilla and Wallowa counties must be ac complished with the utmost regard for our existing economy. Tourism should be a strong third leg to our economic base, and should not be pursued at the risk o f destroying our re g io n 's h e rita g e . By w orking cooperatively, we can jointly tell the full story of our eastern Oregon way o f life. And to Andy K err...just one question. Why do so many "tourists” want to visit or return to eastern Oregon if we have been such poor stewards of the land9 Signed (s) Julie Kelso President of Eastern Oregon Visitors Assc. To the Editor: Allow me to begin by com plimenting The Oregonian for their interest in rural Oregon within the three part coverage en titled “ The Other Oregon” . It is not often that the newspaper acknowledges the issues and con cerns o f readers outside the Portland Metropolitan area, and I appreciate the effort. However, as president of Eastern Oregon Visitors Association, a nine-county tourism marketing organization, it was with great despair that I read the comments quoted by Andy Kerr o f the Oregon Natural Resources Coun cil, in the July 12 article, entitl ed “ The two faces o f Oregon” . Members o f the Eastern Oregon Visitors Association (EOVA) have gone to great lengths over the past eight years to dispel the myth that timber, agriculture, and tourism are “ incompatible” . Mr. Kerr’s comment regarding this issu e, and in fe ren c e that “ cowpies” would offend visitors, not only runs directly against the mission o f our organization, but identifies his total lack o f knowledge o f the tourism in dustry. In fact, it is abundantly clear that the very essence of what is attracting visitors to rural Prices Complete Her Nutrition Picture . . . » Purex Rinse & Soft 21.5 oz Liquid Refills Reg *2 » Anipro PO Box 1186 Hereford.
