Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, June 30, 1993 - THREE Webber-Gray named Oregon scholar St. Patrick’s Senior Center Bulletin Board Weddings There were 119 peple present for the senior dinner June 23. Four meals were taken out. Members of the Mormon church served. Clark Gerkin won the free meal ticket, Irene Crump won the door prize and Peggy Morgan the guest gift. There were 12 guests, many of them were from Hermiston. Ten people stayed for the slide presen tation on annuities that was presented by the Simmons Agency and Marlene Barnett. Eleanor Gonty won the free dinner, given as a door prize. The menu for the senior dinner on July 7 will be oven fried chicken, carrots, potato salad, dilly bread and fresh fruit. Members of the Seventh Day Adventist and Nazarene churches will serve. The Meal Site Committee will meet following the meal. The small bus with 14 people aboard made the trip to Pendleton Friday, June 25. The seniors enjoyed visiting the Indian and Pioneer villages. Ten seniors rode the bus to the dance at Hermiston Saturday evening June 26. The Garden Club will meet July 5 at 7:30 p.m. The flower arranging class will continue each Tuesday 7-9 p.m. for six weeks. Other dates to remember: Tues. and Thurs. exercise, 10-10:30 a.m.; Wed., senior dinner, noon; cards and games Friday, 2:30 p.m.; Saturday, dance at Hermiston; quilting will resume on Mondays in the fall. Fishburn — Dye Kristine Fishburn of Pendleton and David Dye of Moses Lake, WA., were married May 1, 1993 in a double-ring ceremony at the Spotted Ass Ranch in Umatilla. The Reverend Grace Drake performed the ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Earl and Peggy Fishburn, Heppner. Dye’s parents are Frank and Doylene Dye of Warden, WA. , The bride, given in marriage by her parents and brother, Mark Fishburn of Richland, WA., wore an off-the-shoulder ivory satin gown. The floor length dress was accented with lace and seed pearls. The gown was designed and made by Debbie Short of Enterprise. The bride carried an arm bouquet of Candia Roses and wore a wreath of wax flowers. The flowers were arranged by Lori Wood of Weston. The groom wore a gray tuxedo with his lucky red baseball cleats. Maid of honor was Erin Fishburn, Heppner, sister of the bride. Joe Blankenship of Atlanta, Georgia, served as best man. Chelsie Morter, Heppner, goddaughter of the bride served as flower girl. Ushers were Rusty and Ryan LaBar of Moses Lake, WA., cousins of the groom. A reception followed the ceremony. Following a wedding trip to Victoria, B.C. the couple are residing in Woodland, CA. The festival will feature Highland dancing, piping. Scottish athletic events, entertainment, sheep dog trials, a parade, horseshoe tour nam ents, food, music and souvenirs. The tax rate would be limited to no more than 2.5 percent and agricultural and forestry land property tax exemp tions would be maintained at their current level to prevent the loss of “ these vital lands from pro duction,” said the release. Legislation Resolution 11 calls for a constitutional amendment that will require any ad ministrative rules developed to carry out a statute enacted by the Oregon Legislature be reviewed and adopted by the Oregon State Legislature. The constitutional amendment will also require that every bill approved by the Legislature contain a statement of “ Legislative Intent” . The Oreon State Scholarship Commission has selected 1,422 students as Oregon Scholars from the 1993 graduating class of ap proxim ately 28,400 seniors throughout Oregon. Heppner High School senior Laurel Webber-Gray was selected as an Oregon Scholar finalist. Students chosen as scholars were elected from the top 10 per cent of each participating high school in Oregon, and from that five percent were selected as finalists. Students earning this honor are selected on the basis of their outstanding academic achievement. Selection is based primarily on high school grade point average, with consideration given to aptitude test scores. Each recipient will be presented with an Oregon Scholar certificate signed by Governor Roberts, Superintendent of Public Instruction Norma Paulus and chairperson of the State Scholar ship Commission, Kurt Wilcox. Acne affects 80 percent o f the U.S. population between the ages o f 12 and 25. This condition is a prob lem that results when a “plug” composed o f skin, oil, and various secretions from the skin clogs the channels or pores from which a hair grows(calledhairfollicles). Blocked follicles widen and often produce cy sts. C ysts m ay fill to form “whiteheads” or work to the surface o f the skin and take on a black color (“blackheads”). Self-Care: Keep the skin as clean as possible. Remember to wash off sweat after exercising. Use oil or grease-free soap, make-up, and m oisturizers. W ater-based skin products are preferable. A void picking or squeezing the skin which irritates the follicles and could cause further plugging. Drug Treatm ent: Benzyl peroxide as a lotion, gel, cream, or wash is one o f the safest and most effective medicines formild to moderate acne. This medicine releases free oxygen in the skin and reduces the produc tion o f irritating fatty acids. Benzyl peroxide also helps loosen the outer skin layer. Antibiotics such as tet ra cyclin e, erythrom ycin, and minocycline often are helpful in decreasing free fatty acids and bac teria in hair follicles. Other acne medicines include tretinoin (Retin- A), isotretinoin (Accutane), and over-the-counter medicines that may contain sulfur, salicyclic acid, or resorcinol. NO BURNING ALLOWED O.R. On June 23 the Oregon State Grange delegate body passed three resolutions dealing with legislative matters. Legislation Resolution 1 calls for the Oregon Public Meeting law to be amended to require all public agencies in the state of Oregon to have an open citizen comment period during public meetings and accept citizen com ments or written statements on each action item on the agenda of any public meeting. According to a Grange news release, the Oregon State Grange will also support HB 3214.
